In a polluted city like New York, maintaining a perfect skincare routine is a necessity. One step in that this routine that should not be overlooked is exfoliating. Exfoliating is removing dead cells from the outer layer of the skin. Since your skin is constantly renewing itself, you are left with layers of dead skin that needs to be removed if you skip a weekly scrub. Unfortunately, you have to be wary of which products you use since some can do some serious damage.

scrubs to skip

St. Ives Fresh Skin Apricot Scrub

St. Ives is a well-known and affordable skincare brand, and one of their most popular products is their Fresh Skin Apricot Scrub. It is a tempting buy if you are looking for a cheap exfoliant, but please, do not fall for the temptation. The exfoliants in the product make tiny tears in your skin that can make your pores appear larger. In 2016, two women actually filed a lawsuit against Unilever, the parent company to St. Ives. They claimed that the scrub was causing inflammation, which can lead to early aging. The lawsuit was dismissed, however, it raised some red flags for customers, and for good reason considering that many dermatologists advise against using it.

Kylie Skin’s Walnut Scrub

Another popular facial scrub on the market is Kylie Skin’s Walnut Scrub. This product was included in the very first launch of the skincare brand in 2019. After the product dropped, customers began writing complaints online, noting that the scrub is extremely harsh. On top of the damage it can cause to the skin, the product can be dangerous for users who are allergic to nuts.

Plenty of other facial scrubs can create these tears in your skin. The way to determine whether or not your face scrub is harmful is to check out the granules or exfoliants in the product. They should be tiny, and the texture of the scrub should not be overly gritty. If you have sensitive or acne-prone skin, a chemical exfoliant might work better for you. If you’re in the market for a new exfoliator, consider giving the following products a try!
