The Shortcut to Expensive Looking Hair

Hair glossing is one of those things I kept seeing everywhere before I actually understood what it did. At first, I thought it was just another extra step or trend, but it turned out to be a really easy way to make your hair look healthier without going to the salon. Whether you’re trying to bring back shine, tone your color, or just make your hair feel a little more put together, glossing falls into that in-between space of low effort but noticeable results.

What is hair gloss?

Hair gloss is an in-shower treatment meant to be used after shampoo and conditioner. Unlike a regular hair mask or conditioner, “It sits on the surface of the hair to create a reflective finish, and some color glosses also enhance your natural tone or help neutralize unwanted undertones.” Hair gloss is also only really intended to be used around every ten washes; however, if you intend to keep hair color in longer, doing it more often is the way to go. Hair glosses, depending on the one you use, mostly all also include amino acids or hydrating ingredients to also keep your hair healthy, not just appear as it is.

With the rise and accessibility of at-home hair glossing products and treatments, I decided to try one out, along with researching some others. Here is my report back on some of the best I have tried and seen:

Starting strong— this is one I did, in fact, test out on myself. For reference, I have very long, wavy, dyed black hair. With that being said, I was looking for this to revive my color as well as make my hair as shiny as it says it will.

Honest review: It works. I will say, for the best results, blowing your hair out after or assuring you do not go to sleep with wet hair after is an important step. This product is only meant to be used every few washes, not every single one, which is also a plus. My hair felt instantly softer, looked shinier, and felt much more low-maintenance and easy to tame.

During my stop into Sephora to get the other product I tried, a sales associate recommended this one as well. I decided to do some research and check it out in the store to see some differences between this one and others. This one is known to brighten your color if you have highlights or lighter dyed hair. It is free from parabens, petrochemicals, sulfates, and mineral oil, and to top it off, also vegan and cruelty-free. With that being said, I think it is fair to say it is definitely one of the extra healthy ones for your hair.

With this hair gloss from OUAI, it had some mixed reviews and opinions from what I read in my research, so let’s break down who this may be a good product for. This one is a very versatile and easy-to-use gloss; it is adequate for all hair types, contains hyaluronic acid for hydration, and provides heat protection for the next day or two. Many people had said to assure you don’t replace this as your conditioner and to use one before applying this, but otherwise, this is a gloss I would go for if you want a quick pick-me-up or if you are planning to use hot tools on your hair afterwards.

Hair glossing is low-commitment, low-effort, and honestly just a good reset to have when you don’t feel like doing the most. It’s a simple way to bring your hair back to life, boost shine, and make everything look a little more put together—no salon required.
