Billion Dollar Baby

As the youngest member of Kardashian-Jenner clan, Kylie’s considered the most successful. She’s dominating the cosmetic industry, and her beauty label is now valued at one billion-dollars. But what makes her products so worthy? Is it really her products generating all the hype, or is it just her name?

As a fan of the Kardashian-Jenner family—yes, I admit it—I’m very highly influenced by all of them, especially Kylie. Being close in age with her and seeing her become so successful has really inspired me. I believe she truly worked hard for her company and cares for it—but that’s not what this article about.

Starting off at the beginning, we’re all very familiar with her famous Kylie Lip Kits, priced at $29. With shades of all the colors of the rainbow, she has managed to develop perfectly matching liners and lipsticks, something a lot of other competitive cosmetic brands can’t seem to get right.

She may have the perfect shades, but how great is the formula?

Back when the kits first came out in 2015, mixed reviews surfaced on the internet stating that her matte liquid lipstick was flakey and dried out. But look at it this way—matte products are supposed to be dry, so if you don’t like a non-shiny lip color, these aren’t for you.

Glamour came out with an article where the writer, Elizabeth Denton, wrote about her experience with the lip kit. Denton commented, “If you're used to wearing matte lipstick, you know that it feels dry; that's just the reality of the formula. I don't mind it, and Kylie's formula wasn't any drier than others. If anything, it's on the more moisturizing side of things, which is really nice.”

A new drop that Kylie Cosmetics recently came out with was a Kylie Cosmetics x Balmain collection. It includes a new palette, a lip kit, and a gloss.

A review from Politics of Pretty expanded more on the collection. In regards to the new eye shadow palette, which is priced at $42, the reviewer said, “The good news: upon opening and swatching this palette, every shade felt smooth and buttery, even some of the glitters, with very little fallout.”

I personally have a palette from her summer collection called The Summer Palette, and I absolutely love it. The colors are very pigmented and come out beautifully. They are perfect shades, and I use this palette every time I use eyeshadow.

In February of 2017, Kylie came out with her first set of highlighters, priced at $20. Deanna Pai from Glamour said, “Fair warning for the faint of heart or anyone who appreciates a subtle look, because these powders are packed with shimmer and pigment. We can't say for sure, but their sparkle would probably be visible in a blackout.”

I can go on and on about Kylie Cosmetics with all the products she has come out with. Based on the reviews I’ve read, most people have left positive comments and considered themselves happy customers. My conclusion—Kylie Jenner is an icon, but seeing and testing out her products have proven it’s not just about her name. People will gladly give their opinions, good or bad.
