It Has Been a Slow Rush

“The Less I Know the Better” doesn’t seem to have been the mood recently since Tame Impala’s last album Currents was released in 2015. Since then, the talk of a new album has been long rumored and awaited for. It wasn’t until a few months ago that finally all the worries of loyal fans could be put to rest, as Tame Impala’s new album was announced to be released on February 14, 2020. There’s no better day then Valentine’s day to capture the sounds of enchanting heart-warming psychedelic rock.

The genius behind it all, Kevin Parker, is the multi-instrumentalist who brings the magic to this Australian pop project. From humble beginnings of working in his basement and releasing a number of tracks on Myspace in 2007, it is easy to say that he has come a long way. Talk about self made.

The talk of the album cover seems to be just as important as the music itself. The Slow Rush album cover features a red room flooded with sand with an arched window bringing in a bright beam of light. Along side the album title, the visual art seems to be mimicking sand dunes filling up the room as if it was an hourglass. This is a fresh new approach compared to the last album cover which features a psychedelic stream broken apart by a magnetic sphere.

“Every time I make an album, I feel like I’ve forgotten how,” Kevin Parker shares with Apple music in a snip bit attached to the new album. He explains that in his new project he has circled back around to the instrument of which he loves best: the drums. There are a total of twelve tracks on the album, and three of them are already available for listening, as a hint of what to expect after the album’s full release.

When talking to two fans about the upcoming release, here is what they had to say:

“I love all of their music but personally prefer the earlier rock-forward sounds of Lonerism and Innerspeaker. I hope that the new album manages to still sound like rock because I think that mainstream culture is lacking a popular rock band that bridges sounds of the 60’s with modern 21st century changes.” (Nora Markham, 21)

“The singles released have these same dreamy like vibes but with a more pop quality, they’re maybe more “dancey”, and less experimental. They’re almost like a pop-combo of Lonerism and inner speaker-soft dreamy-ness meets a tinge of heavy-ish drums with pop aesthetics plopped on top. I’m excited to hear the album but do hope there’s more variety in sounds.” (Breana Delgatto, 21)

So where will you find yourself on this year's day of love? Whether it’s with your significant other, around family and friends, or if you are tending to yourself know that you can go ahead and click play. Sit back, listen, and let this new album be the soundtrack to your day.
