COVID-19’s Impact on Fitness

Before the pandemic, it was normal to do your workouts at a local gym which provides workout equipment and classes. It’s obvious that many industries have been heavily impacted by COVID-19; however, the world of fitness went through a drastic change. As a society, we were forced to find new ways to stay active during the several months of quarantine. As the world shifted into at home activities, it was no secret that fitness would follow. Fitness has been revolutionized by YouTube, TikTok, and outdoor activities, and below are some suggestions to help you transition from working out in gyms to at home.

Find a YouTube fitness challenge

Workout videos truly saved me during quarantine. So many great creators came out with workout videos that featured great music, instruction, and hard work to mask a workout class. If you scrolled through Instagram or TikTok during quarantine, I’m sure that you’ve heard of our icon Chloe Ting. She proves that you don’t need to work out for hours to see results; taking 10 minutes out of your day to do one of her ab or leg challenges can make a huge difference. Some other creators that posted great at-home workout challenges were Alexis Ren, Kourtney Kardashian, and Addison Rae. If you are in need of some workout videos, I recommend checking out the channels I listed!

TikTok Workouts

If you have TikTok I suggest searching the hashtag “workouts” where you can scroll through millions of creators’ workout routines. Something I found helpful was to take inspiration from various creators and create a routine of my own that I put down in my notes and frequently followed. Social media is a great platform to seek inspiration because it is all around you. A TikTok creator that helped me gain inspiration to create my own routine was Elena Christine. Check out her feed if you feel like creating a personalized workout routine is what works for you!

Get some fresh air

Daily walks around my neighborhood became a staple in my family’s lives during quarantine. Though walking might not sound like the most intense workout, it still helps! I also felt that it was very cleansing to get out of my house and take in the fresh air. Whether it was a walk, bike ride, or an occasional run, this has become a great outlet for me to relieve stress. Due to COVID-19, everyone was impacted in some sort of way, and it has been hard to adjust to this new lifestyle we were forced into. I strongly encourage you to take some time to be with yourself in the outdoors.

Check in with your gym

Due to the pandemic, gyms severely suffered. Many gyms were forced to lower the cost of their memberships or even shut down. It is so important to support businesses at this time so checking in with your gym could be very beneficial. My personal gym posted workout classes virtually and conducted live streams to keep their members engaged. Although many gyms have re-opened, business is still not the same as before, and it is extremely crucial to offer your support in any way possible.

I hope that you found these suggestions for adjusting to working out from home helpful. Though COVID-19 has forced changes upon every industry, we can be resilient and find new ways to respond to these shifts. The world has come together in a way like never before. We must stay strong and continue to be adaptive to the circumstances we continue to face.
