NYFW: Dirty Pineapple F/W 2020

Dirty Pinapple’s F/W 2020 collection was titled Narcissistic Rhapsody and was commenting on the narcissistic impact of social media. “Narcissism is being blown up by social media,” said Nelly Wang, the creator of Dirty Pineapple.  She illustrated this point throughout the collection, with the most obvious piece being a wool coat that had white lettering screen printed on the back spelling out “DECADENCE”.

Wang also drew inspiration from an old civilization. “The whole collection, the visuals we’re drawing from the ancient Greek, kind of looking at it from the modern time and drawing those as inspiration for the patterns, color pallet, and the graphics, then put those into the modern ready-to-wear/urban outfits,” said Wang.

Dirty Pineapple is a brand that’s creating for the future by creating clothes that can suit anybody. They’re a gender neutral brand and plan on staying gender neutral through their existence. “We have things that have more feminine touch and some with a more masculine touch but it depends on how you feel today, your attitude and your mentality,” said Wang. Male models were seen sporting opera length leather gloves and platform boots, meanwhile female models were seen wearing ties and suit jackets. “I think what we really want to do is give everybody more options. Whatever we create is for anyone and everyone,” said Wang.

Gender neutral clothing brands are starting to appear more frequently throughout the fashion industry and hopefully one day this will be the norm for all brands.
