Beauty & Sex: How Good Sex Affects Your Look

Are you having good sex? Okay, actually, I’m sorry—let me preface such an invasive question with context. Having a healthy sex life can give you a radiant glow like no products found on the market. It’s not just because you’re happy. It’s because (good) sex can actually contribute to a plethora of health benefits, from your hair to your nails to your skin. So, let’s get into it.

The “Sex Glow”

The alleged sex glow that all women seem to have after a long night with their betrothed (or friends-with-benefits) is no myth at all. Sex gets your blood circulating in a similar way to that of, well, a moderate workout routine. This leads to a lot of toxins being sweat out, brighter skin, and even fuller lips. The sex glow, however, does not apply if you don’t do your fair share of participating. Pillow princesses, my condolences.

Hormones Begone

Tired of your hormones getting the best of you? Or really, making the worst out of you? Sex hormones can be very complex, and impact your skin in a negative way. However, similar to the causes of the sex glow, sex has similar effects (like exercise) in the sense that it can reduce your hormones and level them out. The byproduct? Clearer skin, healthier hair, even stronger nails. Could you ask for a better overnight spa treatment?

Think Twice About Aging

Sex can prove to be a well full of L’Oreal Anti-Aging Cream on steroids, but without the cream. No sexual innuendo intended. But really, sexologist Dr. Yvonne Fulbright claims in her book, “The Better Sex Guide To Extraordinary Lovemaking,” that sex can actually press pause on visibly aging. She goes on about a 10-year-long study done where 3,500 men and women who were both having sex regularly and not having sex regularly were placed in front of a two-way mirror. Participants on the other side guessed their ages. The participants guessed for those who were sexually-active that they were seven to twelve years younger than they really were, while the non-sexually-active group were guessed to look older than they were.

This is, in part, due to the collagen-inducing benefits of healthy sex, which wards off the eternally-feared wrinkles and pesky dry skin.

The Prevention Method

Welcome to the flip-side of sex: Birth control. And pregnancy. Somehow, the pill and pregnancy create similar effects in our outward appearance (aside from the baby part). You can thank the clear skin and rosy glow you have both when on the pill and during pregnancy to the upchuck of hormones rushing through your body. The pill can, of course, have adverse side effects for many, but if it works for you then congratulations on the many benefits it can provide. As for the other end of things, while creating an entire human is incredible, I would have to strongly advise against doing that if you’re only in it for the pink cheeks and smooth skin. Who knew being safe could be so stunning?

Happy And Hydrated

It seems contrarian to claim that sex can actually keep you more hydrated when comparing it to activities like workout routines or spa treatments, which are notorious for dehydrating you. However, due to the increased blood circulation, your skin retains moisture better than usual and gives it that healthy glow you want. But, please keep drinking water. Double-whammy your skin with hydration.

Sex is not the end-all-be-all of beautiful skin and luscious hair. But, when you do it right, it doesn’t hurt the process. Of course, though, dry spells are real and so is the Glossier Cloud Paint blush with an adaptable shade range, and the Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream which can help you fake your brilliantly beaming post-sex-glow. Happy blushing, everyone!
