How TikTok Changed My Beauty Routine

If you’re not already on TikTok, I can guarantee you that by the end of this quarantine period, you’ll have the app installed on your phone. I am here to admit that I, too, was one of the people who would try to convince everyone that I could never be caught dead on TikTok. Now here I am, a month into quarantine, writing an article about how Tiktok has transformed my beauty routine—no shame!

TikTok has been the home to some of the most popular viral videos the internet has seen, such as the famed “Hype House” and the dance to Meg Thee Stallion’s catchy single “Savage.” But, that’s not what we’re here to talk about today. After spending hours scrolling through the “beauty tips” section of TikTok, I came across tons of beauty hacks and a range of products that were reviewed repeatedly. So of course, I had to give them a try to see if they were worth the hype.

The Ordinary Peeling Solution

The Ordinary Peeling Solution was one of the most raved about products on beauty reviews pages. Not only is it only $7, but it is claimed to give a glowing complexion and keep breakouts away. Over the past few years, I have heard nothing but good reviews about the affordable skincare brand The Ordinary, so I was excited to try this one out. My only hesitation about it was the color of the formula being blood-red and having the potential to stain my skin, but hey, we’re in quarantine, so it’s not like anyone but my family are seeing me anyway.

After first applying, I felt a stinging, tingly sensation. It wasn’t overwhelming, but it was definitely uncomfortable. I washed it off after the recommended 10 minutes and didn’t really see a difference in my skin. However, I have been using it twice a week for the past 3 weeks, and my skin has definitely seen a big change. My skin feels and looks insanely smooth, and I haven’t even had a breakout since I started including this peeling solution in my skincare routine. So, if you’re like me and struggle with breakouts, but need a product that won’t break the bank—I would definitely give this one a try.

E.L.F. Cosmetics Poreless Putty Primer

I would consider myself a loyal Tatcha consumer. From their Skin Canvas Primer, to their Dewy Skin Cream, their products have reigned a cult favorite by beauty gurus for years. However, their products can tend to be a bit pricey… bringing me to the next favorite TikTok beauty product, the E.L.F. Cosmetics Poreless Putty Primer. This is a claimed-to-be-dupe for Tatcha’s Skin Canvas Primer ($52) for a fraction of the price ($8…um, hello?!).

As a long-time Tatcha lover, I was intrigued. I am here to let you all know that the E.L.F. Putty Primer yields the same results as the Tatcha Skin Canvas—it effortlessly glides right onto the skin, and keeps makeup staying fresh all day long. I might just keep this E.L.F primer in place of my beloved Tatcha primer, because it quite literally does the same exact thing, which I’m shocked to say. The only difference between the two is that Tatcha has more skin benefits, such as its anti-aging and protective benefits (which it should, given the price point), but besides that, I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between the two.

L’Oreal Paris Makeup Infallible 24HR Fresh Wear Liquid Longwear Foundation

I love a good, full-coverage beat. If done correctly (by not caking it on), your skin will be left with a porcelain finish that’ll change your life. However, some full coverage foundations tend to feel a bit heavy on the skin and inevitably lead to breakouts. I have been a big fan of the Juvias Place I Am Magic foundation for the past couple months, but TikTok told me to buy the L’Oreal Paris Makeup Infallible 24HR Fresh Wear Liquid Longwear Foundation, so I did exactly that. This foundation formula has a lightweight formula that works well with acne-prone and sensitive skin.

Unfortunately, I struggle with both acne-prone and sensitive skin, so when I find a foundation that doesn’t make me break out, it automatically becomes my new “holy grail,” as the beauty gurus would call it. I have freckles on my face that I like to cover up when I want to wear a full glam look, so this foundation proved to be amazing for that purpose. It gives the perfect amount of dewiness without making me look too oily, leaving my skin super radiant and smooth.

Reverse Base Makeup Hack

This next viral make up hack uploaded by TikToker @ridaaaamat is going to change your entire makeup routine. The video, which now has more than 3.5 million views, suggests that you do your base makeup routine backwards. What does she mean by that, you might ask? She applied her moisturizer with a fluffy brush, then followed by patting on a translucent powder, along with setting spray, after which she finally added her primer. Considering that I have been doing the same beauty routine for years now, and have extremely sensitive, breakout-prone skin—it’s safe to say I was pretty skeptical about this drastic change, but wanted to give it a go.

I started off with a my normal go-to moisturizer, the Tatcha Dewy Skin Cream (shocker!). Then, I went in with some of my Fenty Beauty Pro Filt'r Instant Retouch Setting powder, following it up with spritzes of Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray. When that dried, I went in with the aforementioned E.L.F. Poreless Putty Primer. Before I added my foundation, I couldn’t help but notice the already promised results—a poreless, matte base. My makeup stayed on really well throughout the day, however, it did feel a little heavier than my normal makeup routine. I would definitely save this routine for a special event or night out, because I was pleasantly surprised with how well it held up.

If you’re looking to get new products but don’t have the mental capacity to sit through a 20-minute YouTube video, you should definitely check out the short beauty tips on TikTok. These products are all under $20, and they all did wonders for my beauty routine and skin, so I highly recommend it.
