“Lo Vas A Olvidar”: You Won’t Forget Billie Eilish & Rosalía's New Song

Billie Eilish and Rosalía’s new song, “Lo Vas A Olvidar,” is a change in pace from typical Spanglish songs like the “Despacito” Remix, circa 2019 with Justin Bieber. “Lo Vas A Olvidar” means “you will forget,” but fans of this song will not forget how powerful and iconic the sound this duo created is and the legendary nature of two female artists coming together from different cultures.

There has been talk since early 2019 about the two singer-songwriters working together on a song. Rosalía posted an adorable photo of her & (pre-green hair) Billie captioned, “Can’t wait to finish our song” in March 2019. Fans have been waiting for this moment to arrive. In the last week of January 2021, Billie and Rosalía delivered.

“Lo Vas A Olvidar” was made for the popular HBO show Euphoria. It was released only days before the “Part Two: Jules” Euphoria Special Episode, which featured their song. As a long-time Billie fan and Euphoria fan, I was ecstatic for this collab. The collab pushed me to explore more of Rosalía’s music and learn more about her career, which makes the song all the more special.

Las primeras colaboraciones femeninas de Billie y Rosalía

Rosalía has collaborated with quite a few American artists like The Weeknd, Travis Scott, Pharrell Williams and British artist James Blake—all men. Billie’s collaborations previously were all men as well (Khalid and Vince Staples). However, Billie has never written/performed with a Spanish singer until now. This was Rosalía’s first time writing and singing with another female artist. Both artists are known for their lyrics and angelic voices. The sound they created with “Lo Vas A Olvidar” was culturally eclectic and different from their other work.

The Spanglish-song is primarily written in Spanish and sang by both artists in Spanish (yes, Billie sang in Spanish) with a few lyrics in English (sang by both artists). Eva Westphal, a musician who is also fluent in Spanish, says, “The lyrics are cool although somewhat repetitive, but I think that’s because it’s a mostly English-speaking audience.”

Eva is right, as the song was developed for Euphoria, an American TV show, so the song would be heard by people who primarily speak English. Comparatively, Bailey Compton, a long-time Billie fan says, “I think the lyrics are beautiful, and even though I don’t really know what some of it means in Spanish, it still sounds amazing.”

“I thought the lyrics of the song were so unforgettable and relatable. To me, it’s exceptional that women of all different cultures come together and collaborate. I think it’s very empowering,” says Alexa Martinez, who is also a fluent Spanish speaker and Rosalía fan. Bailey echoed this sentiment, claiming, "When there are multiple languages in one song, it just heightens the beauty of each voice."

“It was super cool to see a Spanish song represented and two badass female singers. I’d love for them to collab for a Spanish TV show,” Eva says.

Through the Instagram Poll I conducted, I noticed that many suggested they enjoyed “Lo Vas A Olvidar” and they would like to see Billie and Rosalía collaborate for future projects—hopefully, we won’t have to wait two years. Most of my followers who participated suggested they are Billie fans, like me. Nonetheless, it was refreshing to see fans of Rosalía, and fluent Spanish speakers share their appreciation for the collab. This song was a hit and an outstanding addition to both singer-songwriters’ careers. When talented, ingenious women from different cultures come together expect greatness.
