#Where’sMyStimmy? Biden’s Administration Hasn’t Deposited Stimulus Checks

Sigh, still waiting for that stimulus check? Me too. I’m here to tell you why you don’t have that $2,000 deposit yet. Due to the frenzy caused by Trump and the very slow transfer of power, Biden’s administration is having trouble getting everything solidified to be able to send out this money, which has now been lowered to $1,400, to those who are eligible. Rewind a few weeks to Biden’s first week in office when he proposed the $1,400 stimulus package. In layman’s terms, the GOP was shortchanging us by trying to lower the amount given out. President Biden, who was still standing firm in the $1,400 check plan, refused to back down. His reasoning is that the $1,400 will be a completion to the prior $600 check that was sent out a few months ago. So, everything is at a standstill.

While all of this is happening, the Democrats are also trying to impeach former President Donald Trump. Too many things were happening at once, causing the small detour of trying to impeach Trump to become a gigantic roadblock in the way of getting the stimulus plan passed.

Politico authors Caitlin Emma, Sarah Ferris, and Heather Caygle comment on the current Democratic struggle, stating, “Democrats are confident they have the votes to adopt the budget, though there is some lingering anxiety among several moderate Blue Dog Democrats that the party should move other smaller relief bills as they wade into the thornier process known as reconciliation.”

What’s reconciliation? Basically, it allows for certain laws and bills to be expedited. According to the CBPP, reconciliation is “created by the Congressional Budget Act of 1974, reconciliation allows for expedited consideration of certain tax, spending, and debt limit legislation… reconciliation bills aren’t subject to filibuster and the scope of amendments is limited, giving this process real advantages for enacting controversial budget and tax measures.”

Flash forward to February 5th when the Senate backs Biden’s plan (with Kamala casting her first of most likely many legendary tie-breaking votes) and overrides Republican opposition using the reconciliation process. So, now we are all left to ask: “When will the stimulus be deposited into my bank account so I can pay my rent (or buy my Bernie Sitting Meme Sweatshirt)?” Well, that’s still a little unclear.

The House needs to now approve the plan, which might be a problem due to the $4 trillion of aid that Congress has already passed previously. Even now, Biden is very adamant about keeping the checks at $1,400—his ironclad resolve never breaking once. The key things holding up the bill are the raise in minimum wage, disparity in funds allocated to reopening schools, and unemployment insurance.

Politico authors claim, “The House will vote later Wednesday on a budget measure that marks the critical first step toward muscling Biden’s package through Congress without GOP votes.”

With the Democratic majority, it is thought that it will be approved by the end of the month, but that’s still a pretty long ways away. So really, the answer of when the money will be in our pockets is truly up in the air, but I know we are all waiting with bated breath for this much-needed “economy-boosting” stimulus plan. So stay tuned, and maybe the check will arrive in time for you to snatch up one of Bernie’s restocked meme sweatshirts—or at least a pair of mittens.
