Essential Viewing for Black History Month

From classic films to comedic series, these are essential to understand the Black experience.

Between the COVID pandemic, Black Lives Matter protests, and a new President, last year and this year are significant for many reasons. This Black History Month, instead of highlighting documentaries that present collective Black trauma (though important to watch), I recommend these classic films and shows, from the 1980s until now, across multiple genres. Although these titles display black actors and experiences, they are relatable to any movie lover, no matter their race. If your knowledge of modern cinema doesn’t include at least a few Black titles, here is a great place to start.
