She’s Having a Maybe: Gossip Girl 1.02 Recap

While the season is just beginning, that doesn’t mean the scandals and secrets are going to be held off. Episode 2 is now released, and it’s even crazier than the pilot.

Starting off the episode is parent-teacher conferences, one of the most dreaded nights for teachers. As we’ve previously learned, the students have a way of controlling the teachers, and this night typically puts that into perspective in a big way. It also doesn’t help that the teachers don’t have much bait on the students right now, but in true gossip girl fashion, that won’t last for long.

Down in Dumbo, Julien, Max, Monet, Luna, Audrey, and Aki are having a typical night out. Monet and Luna help Julien plan ways to hide her breakup with Obie from the public, but there’s no way it’ll stay hidden for long in this town. Meanwhile, Max continues to flirt with both Audrey and Aki, hoping sooner or later, one of them will give in. Perhaps he knows they’ll end up giving in as he can sense the tension in their relationship. Aki tends to act more as a therapist than a boyfriend to Audrey, especially when it comes to Audrey struggling with her relationship with her mother.

As the two of them fight, Max finds other ways to entertain himself other than Audrey and Aki. One of them happens to be an electives teacher at Constance. The more Max tries to pursue, the farther the teacher pushes him away.

After lying to Julien about heading to bed early, Obie heads to the Upper West Side to see a grounded Zoya. On the Upper West Side, Obie sneaks up to see a grounded Zoya, after lying to Julien about heading to bed early. Which of course, someone leaks to GG. Julien tries to post an old photo of Obie & herself to make it seem fake, which works for the time being and GG becomes “canceled.

The next day, we see the first look at Audrey’s relationship with her mother, Katherine, who goes by Kiki for short. It’s obvious Kiki has a lot going on. Kiki’s husband left her for her assistant, and her business is going downhill. While we feel for Audrey wishing her mother was around more, it becomes apparent why there’s a disconnect at the moment.

At school, Julien attempts to reconnect with Obie. However, Obie seems set on staying apart. We can see he only has eyes for one girl, and it’s not Julien. Julien aims to find dirt on Zoya for revenge, which only GG would be able to do. In exchange for digging into Zoya’s past, Julien offers to “uncancel” GG.

On his next attempt to pursue the teacher, Max takes Aki to a steam room he knows the teacher hangs out at. In an aim to make the teacher jealous, Aki kisses Max. As it seems to work, Aki suggests doing it again, but we all know that’s not the only reason he suggests it.

Later that night is a fundraiser. Zoya and her father end up attending, thanks to Obie. However, this ends badly for Julien, and not just because her ex is pining after her sister. Julien’s father hadn’t realized Zoya and her dad had moved to town. And when the two dads see each other, it only makes sense for chaos to ensue.

Speaking of chaos, on Kiki’s first night out, she becomes a drunken mess, nearly cutting her hand open after breaking glass. This should definitely be a reminder of the dangers of alcohol.

Zoya and Obie end up sneaking out of the party, which leads to Julien wanting to leak Zoya’s big secret. She calls the dads, and of course, her minions Luna and Monet aren’t too far behind. As soon as she sees Zoya and Obie goofing off together, we learn she does have a heart. She could never be what Obie needed, but Zoya can. She ends up defending Zoya and keeping whatever juicy secret to herself. Although, I’m sure it won’t be long till it’s released.

Back at the fundraiser, we see Max pursuing the teacher again. It seems as though the teacher is interested but tells Max to wait till his graduation. While Max is slightly rejected, he doesn’t spend the night alone. We see the next morning that Audrey also has begun a Max Affair. It’s not too surprising for Audrey, especially after the drama with her mom and feeling like Aki isn’t really there for her. But who knew Max was the one to fill the void?

On that same morning, we see Julien’s dad forgiving her for bringing Zoya and her father to town. While he’s hated Zoya’s dad, he knows how proud her mom would be of her and how he never should’ve kept them apart.

We can see this talk reflects a lot into Julien, as once she gets to school, she sees that Zoya is about to withdraw from Constance. Thankfully, she stops her and even gives her blessing for Zoya and Obie to be together.

While it all seems to be a happy ending, there’s still a lot more to see this season. What is Zoya’s big secret? How will the Max-Audrey-Aki love triangle play out? Will the dads find a way to get along? You’ll just have to wait till next week to see what happens next, and we’ll be here to tell the story every step of the way.

Xoxo.
