Selena Gomez Documentary: 'My Mind & Me'

Singer, songwriter, and actress, Selena Gomez launched her documentary titled, My Mind & Me, on November 4th with Apple TV. The documentary showcases Gomez’s ups and downs throughout her career. We get a raw and intimate look into her six year journey as she battles fame, and lupus, all while coping with her mental health diagnosis of bipolar disorder.

My Mind & Me

The documentary pulls back the curtains of fame, and shows the many struggles Gomez has endured throughout her career. The film also touches on the countless efforts she has put in to fix her complicated relationship she has had with herself.

“It’s OK to feel not good enough and to feel like you’re complicated and complex. It’s just about having a healthy relationship with how you talk to yourself, how you seek help, how you talk to other people,” Gomez states at the Los Angeles premiere of the film.

The film starts in 2016 right after the release of her second studio album Revival . The scene opens with Gomez crying after her last rehearsal for her upcoming tour.

Gomez explains, “There’s a voice that comes in my head that says that, ‘You miss this. That sucked. That sucked. Oh, you get a glimpse of yourself on the screen—wow, that looks pretty fucking shitty.” She continues, “It just sucks the life out of me, and I don’t want to perform. The pressure is just overwhelming.”

As the tour progresses, we watch as her mental begins to rapidly deteriorate and eventually hitting a breaking point, leading her to cut the tour short after 55 performances. Upon the tour’s cancellation, rumors began to swarm about Gomez being an alcoholic or on drugs—neither of which were the case.

We can also see her time spent in a mental health hospital, were Gomez wa diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Throughout the film, she speaks very candidly about her mental health diagnosis and how she was ashamed of it for so long, but eventually begins to own this part of herself.

Gomez also suffer severely from lupus which we can see first hand in the documentary. In 2014 she was diagnosed but over the pandemic the autoimmune disease began to painfully flare up.

“It just hurts in the morning. When I wake up, [I] immediately start crying because it hurts—like everything,” she says, visibly suffering.

“I think my past and my mistakes—that’s what drives me into depression. It’s like, my whole life since I was a kid, I’ve been working… the only thing I want is [to be] a mom. I don’t wanna be super famous. I just feel stuck, and I just wanna move forward.” Gomez explains.

In the film, Gomez mentions wanting to start an organization to help youth with their mental health after visiting students in Kenya with the We Organization. In 2020, she started the Rare Impact Fund that provides access to resources to support mental health. Rare donates 1% of all to sales to the fund to increase access to mental health services in education settings.

After the release of the film, many fans are commending Gomez for her vulnerability and honesty. Her willingness to open up about such sensitive topics has resonated with many others who also suffer from their mental health and physical ailments.
