I know, many of us are ashamed to admit that we *still might* read on this app, but we can't ignore these amazing books that are hidden underneath all the cringey fanfiction. Since its rise in popularity, Wattpad became a safe space for most of us at a young age to grow our love for books—and possibly carry it into adulthood. Available to anyone, this site allows you to read and write freely of any genre in an online community.

In search of finding a new story, it can be difficult if you don't have a direction, especially if you're reading on Wattpad. We often look at covers, titles, and tags to guide us to the perfect book. But with romance tropes, we already have an idea.

Whether it be a character trait, a plot, or common themes. With fresh stories to browse every day on Wattpad’s homepage, any specific storyline you are looking to read could simply be found in the search bar. So, browse. Use this list of popular romance tropes to help you find your favorite Wattpad story.

The Good Girl/Bad Boy

The classic dynamic between the ‘good girl and the bad boy’ is seen so often in storytelling. From movies, books, and even songs, this trope highlights the toxic behavior of a boy before meeting a girl that changes his life. Whether he takes part in sex, drugs, or violence, the bad boy protrudes in the storyline because of his mysterious manner.

These two protagonists will end up changing each other's lives drastically. Typically, in the POV of the girl, we see how the boy manages to ruin her seemingly ‘boring’ life. They somehow fall in love on the journey of their encounters. Often, the good girl will end up changing his bad-boy ways, and in return, he will soon learn to love no one but her.

Sports romance

Athletic relationships are most prominent between the connection of the ‘nerd’ and the typical ‘jock.’ The jock is praised by everyone around him—he's popular, he gets the girls—and anything else he wants. In these stories, the girl is most often pictured as a bookworm.

She knows little to nothing about sports or anything about her school, it seems. But, when they somehow stumble across each other's lives, they can't get enough of each other. Even though this theme is most popular on Wattpad, there are other aspects of sports romance. Some examples are the underground fighter, the ballet dancer, or the figure skater

Enemies to Lovers

This cliché favorite focuses on the narrative between two individuals that strongly dislike each other. The enemies to lover's trope will typically feature a long history of resentment and jealousy towards each other. To push them over the edge, they're usually forced into creating a dynamic with each other.

As readers, we get to witness this exciting journey of constant clashing of strong personalities and undeniable sexual tension. Although they won't realize it for a while, the chemistry between these two will always have them work better as a team.

Soulmates

Do you believe in love at first sight? For these stories, you must. A werewolf love story—another Wattpad favorite. This fantasy takes us through the relationship between two fated mates destined by the Moon Goddess. Whether the protagonist is human, rogue, or Alpha's daughter, they always end up with the big bad Alpha.

Billionaire/Arranged Marriage

To fall in love with the CEO of a successful company, the billionaire trope presents us with the (not so) glitz and glamor of relationships with the rich. What's the key to success? In this case, it seems that arranged marriages are the answer. It's only a matter of time before these two newlyweds actually fall in love with each other.

To all the romance lovers, we're not shy of getting comfortable in the relationships we read in books. Slowly, we start to form our own idea of love—what we like and dislike. We may reflect this in our own relationships—or we may reflect this in our favorite romance novels. Having these tropes in literature offers many of us book readers a sense of excitement in our favorite clichés. You may either hate or love Wattpad, but as a fellow reader, it's hard to unattach from it once you start.
