The Rise of Street Style Instagram Blogs

Cities across the world have created their own aesthetics for themselves that come to life through the style of those inhabiting their spaces. Street-style Instagram blogs have a surge of support, that has only been rising since the pandemic’s initial quarantine phase left us without street-style fashion entirely. Without further ado, here is a roundup of five follow-worthy street style accounts to go to for everyday inspiration when needed.

@ParisiansInParis

The anonymous Instagram-style blog @parisiensinparis began posting slyly-captured images that salute the chic styles of Paris in 2018. 724,000 followers later, they have created a whole community of people panic-reaching for their camera phone when they see a delicious orange coat waiting for a light to change. This page’s story and main feed posts are a constant combination of admin and follower spottings of the fancy, European ease. The blog recently channeled this online favor into a book of their best finds by the same name, Parisiens in Paris

@NewYorkersInTheCity

@Newyorkersinthecity was created in 2021 in hopes of providing what the blog owners (who prefer to stay anonymous) refer to as “a casual glimpse into… the effortlessness of everyday people in one of our favorite cities.” This account presents New York styles through sneaky pictures taken on weekend walks around different city neighborhoods and follower submissions to be seen in their stories.

Clay Lute, a junior at LIM College was an early target of this city page, featured here in a khaki coat and ivory jeans carrying a MacNally Jackson tote making the look all the more SoHo. Being an anonymous account, Clay had no clue about the post until a coworker DM’d it to him. “I thought it was a cool moment seeing that someone thought I was cool enough to document,” he says, “but it would have been nice if they would’ve asked permission to take my picture and post it.”

@MilanesiAMilano

Rising out of the pandemic, @milanesiamilano arrived with anonymous style photos tracking seasonal trends around Milan, Italy in October of 2020. Following grew quickly to 115,000 with Italian media coverage in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and more. With an Italian language blog of the same name, merchandise available to buy through DM, and even an ice cream partnership with Crema, an Italian gelato company, this Instagram page has found a life outside of the social media app, bringing the polished neutrals far beyond Italy and into your closet.

@Londoners.Style

A lowkey example is @londoners.style whose crispy account features the backs of so many coats of London. Another 2021 born account that takes a casual approach to the medium in little detail of the face or clothing offered, but the high-quality images make for great closet envy and reverse Google image results amidst cloudy skies.

@WatchingNewYork

Johnny Cirillo began @watchingnewyork as “a simple photography and street style project,” which he captioned his first post on the Instagram page. The account has since seen nearly 1,500 posts celebrating eccentric, almost extreme individual styles with bold colors and statement pieces that romantically feel as if they’d only be found in New York.

The twin sisters seen in the post above are LIM College alumni Julia (left) and Michelle (right) Brunson who met Johnny when walking around Williamsburg in 2021. Michelle, who graduated from LIM that year felt “a lot of emotions” when approached to be featured. Overwhelmed by the account’s 633,000 followers having both positive and negative thoughts on their outfit, but as a fan of his work, Michelle also felt it was “really cool that Johnny chose [them] to take [their] photo and feature on his page.”

Each cities page offers a point of view different from the next and a new variation of styles to inspire trends, as tracked through the story highlights on many of these pages, and the bloggers themselves. These street-style Instagrams offer confidence in followers to explore their style and celebrate the individuality of city folk everywhere Don’t mind us, we’ll be walking around dressed to the nines until further notice.
