How To Leave A Date 101

My roommate was violently throwing up. She ordered salmon rolls from the nearby sushi place (although, it was actually cinnamon rolls because she hates sushi). Our other roommate wasn’t home yet. I was going to have to leave my date in order to go take care of her. Thankfully, I had been hyping up how much I love my roommates a half-hour earlier, so he didn’t seem offended when I had to leave.

Although, he may have been offended if he knew I was lying.

Dating is hard. You have to work so diligently to try and find someone who you’re compatible with. Sometimes even making small talk can feel like the most stressful action. And when things aren’t going well, it can be hard to tough it out. If you can’t seem to click right away, what’s the point in giving it another chance?

Leaving a date can be super awkward and uncomfortable. Most dates are something that you can’t really end early. It’s weird to leave before you pay the dinner bill or are in the middle of a movie. But if you’re desperate to get out of there, who cares? You can try my method, or check out one of the other ways below.

1. UTI

Aubrey was going on a Tinder date with a boy from her college. He had all the red flags she tried to avoid, but he was cute, so she gave him a chance. The date started with heading to get froyo. During which, he refused to wear a mask and wanted her to take hers off too. After that, they went to hang out at his parent’s house. As soon as they did, Aubrey regretted it, as he took it as a sign to she wanted to get very physical. Now, one of the best excuses women use is being on their period, but in Aubrey’s case, she used her UTI to her benefit. While she wasn’t lying, this could be a good fib to use. She got to leave, and while the boy told his parents that “this one will be back,” she never did.

2. mom said it’s time to go

Now, as we’ve learned from Aubrey, Tinder dates don’t always go as planned. In Leah’s case, he had lied about many things she hadn’t anticipated (his height, for example). It was annoying, but she thought she could let it slide. As the pair had their coffee date, things just seemed more and more suspicious. Leah would bring up something they had discussed over text, and he made it obvious that a lot of their conversation was based on lies. After forty five minutes of talking, Leah had enough. She let him know she had an “urgent” text from her mother and she would have to leave. He seemed confused, but she was able to escape. Following the date, the boy continued to reach out. Leah ended up ghosting him, because I guess he never got the hint that it was over.

3. apartment is flooding

Ben met a lady on Hinge that he grew to be quite fond of. It took them a while to meet up, but once they did, it was an instant regret. Unfortunately for Ben, the girl looked nothing like her photos. There was no graceful way to leave, so he tried to tough it out. They went to a museum together, which was awkward and uncomfortable. He was hoping to leave following the museum portion, but she wanted to get food after. There was no more of a perfect exit strategy than a fake phone call. Ben set a 30-second timer, and when it went off, he pretended as if it was his ring tone. He “answered the phone” to find out that his apartment was flooding. He screamed, “not my sofa!” before letting her know she would have to leave. The two never talked again.

4. friend is in the hospital

Emma met her potential love interest in the most romantic way possible: on the street. Chad came up to her, told her she was beautiful, and asked for her phone number. A couple months later, they finally got to go on their first date. The two were hanging out in the park, but he wouldn’t keep his hands off of her. Not in a cute way, but in a creepy and awkward way. Emma couldn’t take the invasion of personal space any longer. Her friend Lucy called to let Emma know she was in the hospital. Chad didn’t really believe this excuse, but it worked. Afterwards, he was blocked and they never talked again.

Now, maybe you’re better than the rest of us and you can actually be honest about wanting to leave. But for those of you like me, I hope you found some great excuses for your next bad date. Make sure to comment down below which story was your favorite, or if you have a good one of your own.
