Flashback to 2010: You're getting ready for school, and although it is super early, you still want to make an effort to dress cute while staying comfortable. You reach for your trusty ballet flats that never fail to give your look that Serena Van Der Woodsen, preppy chic vibe.

Now, back to 2022. When scrolling through Pinterest and TikTok you might’ve seen that ballet flats are back for this fall. It might be a bit controversial, but the iconic shoe is making a big return to the must-have shoe list for this season.

If you are not into wearing classic fall shoes like knee-high boots, chunky loafers, UGG boots, or sneakers like the trending Adidas Sambas, then ballet flats might be the perfect shoe for you.

They can dress up any look and adhere to many aesthetics; whether it is ballet core, biker core, or even streetwear. The best thing about trends recycling themselves is that we can style them with more modern pieces.

For example, I recently bought some silver ballet flats through a live auction on WhatNot. Knowing that knee-high socks are trending for the season, as well as all things leather, I decided to style them with white knee-high bobby socks, a leather midi skirt, and a black cropped top.

However, styling ballet flats can be catered to whatever style you prefer. If you are more of a baggy jeans and t-shirt kind of person, then pair your favorite flats with looser denim rather than a leather skirt and knee-high socks. This will give the ballet flats a more dressed-down vibe while still maintaining their classic look.

I would suggest looking at your local thrift stores for ballet flats first if you are not too sure about whether you want to fully commit to the trend or not. Plus, if you aren’t into it, you can easily resell or donate them (which we recommend).

If secondhand is not your speed, here are a couple of cute ballet flat options that you can start looking into.

Now, there is only one question to ask yourself: will you be reliving your Y2K style and trying out ballet flats again?
