2024 Presidential Election: Meet the Candidates

With primaries well underway, and just over a year until the 2024 election, there are still seventeen people in the running for President of the United States. Three democrats, thirteen republicans, and one independent race for the position while trying to win over the American public.

Last week, we covered former President Donald Trump, humanitarian Marianne Williamson, former Vice President Mike Pence, and Governor Chris Christie. Today, we visit the key policies of four more Presidential Hopefuls.

From Florida Governor Ron Desantis to businessman Perry Johnson, who are these candidates, and what is their goal for the American future?

Ron Desantis (Republican)

My actions will speak louder than words.
— Ron Desantis

Key Policies:

Governor Desantis is grounded in “conservative priorities.” He plans to champion the following:

  • “Protecting citizens from the harmful impacts of Biden's border crisis by enacting E-Verify and other bold policies against illegal immigration, such as banning sanctuary cities”

  • “Defending parental rights and eliminating CRT,” and “defunding DEI bureaucracy in higher education and holding tenured professors accountable”

  • “Protecting the unborn and lowering prescription drug costs”

  • “Supporting law enforcement and our veterans,” while also “electing tougher penalties for drug dealers and sex offenders”

Democracy is messy, and it’s hard. It’s never easy.
— Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Key Policies:

  • Cost of Living: Kennedy Jr. believes that “people who work hard should be able to afford rent.” If elected, he plans to raise the federal minimum wage, drop housing costs, support small businesses, and redistribute government spending towards infrastructure, higher education, domestic prosperity, and health and child care.

  • Environment: In terms of the environment, Kennedy Jr. plans to “shift agricultural subsidies so as to encourage regenerative practices, incentivize the transition of industry to zero-waste cycles and clean energy sources, protect wild lands from further development, and restore the USDA and the EPA.”

  • Honest Government: This policy describes how the government is for the people, by the people. Coming from a family of politicians, the Kennedy administration plans to “restore integrity to government.”

Perry Johnson (Republican)

We live in the greatest country the world has ever known. And I want to keep it that way!
— Perry Johnson

Key Policies:

  • Two Cents Plan: Johnson’s “Two Cents Plan” is rather straight to the point. He believes that by ensuring the federal government lives with two cents less, per dollar, America can “balance the budget and end inflation.”

  • Energy: Johnson states, “We must promote domestic energy production and ensure that the US leads the way in promoting energy, clean reforms, and reducing emissions. We must work WITH the industry rather than dictating to them and stifling their innovation.”

  • Border Security: If elected, Johnson’s border policy would focus on the following three qualities: “Tight and non-porous border security, strict policies to cease and desist illegal immigration, with a zero-tolerance policy toward those who are discovered to have immigrated illegally, and create an easier pathway to citizenship for vetted immigrants.”

  • Education: Johnson wishes to put education back in the hands of parents by defunding the Department of Education and returning that money back to the States.

Asa Hutchinson (Republican)

You’re never too old to start learning, and you’re never too young to aim high and achieve great things.
— Asa Hutchinson

Key Policies:

  • Prosperity: Under this policy, Hutchinson plans to “ignite economic growth, unleash American energy, empower the private sector, reform immigration policy, and invest in the workforce.”

  • Strength: The Hutchinson Administration will “sustain military preeminence through investing in our military, promote responsible statesmanship, and ensure fiscal discipline by prioritizing budgetary restraint.”

  • Freedom: This policy thrives on rebuilding American trust and integrity. If elected, Hutchinson plans to “reform federal law enforcement, protect American sovereignty, and enhance public safety.”
