Discovering Genres: Folk-Pop

Bob Dylan. Joni Mitchell. Simon & Garfunkel. These are the names that have defined the folk-pop genre throughout the decades. Now, artists like Hozier and Noah Kahan have created a resurgence of mainstream popularity for this unique music style.

Folk-pop is characterized by heartfelt lyrics, a catchy melody, and acoustic instrumentation. Banjos, violins, and guitars are common sounds that are woven throughout these emotional tunes.

Fleet Foxes

With their start on MySpace, Fleet Foxes released an EP and their first studio album in 2008. The band has been a constant force in the folk-pop genre since, releasing four studio albums along with multiple EPs.

Amethyst Kiah

Amythyst Kiah is a solo artist who channels folk, pop, punk, and blues to create a unique blend of genres. A Chattanooga-Tennessee native, Kiah was greatly influenced by the bluegrass and country music of her youth.

She has released two albums, Dig and Wary + Strange, as well as received a Grammy nomination for her song “Black Myself”.

Joshua Hyslop

Canadian folk singer-songwriter Joshua Hyslop has been a fixture in folk-pop since his 2011 debut EP release, Cold Wind. Since then, Hyslop created soothing melodies with phenomenal lyricism to back it up. He has released four studio albums throughout his career, plenty for you to kick back and relax to.

Bonny Light Horseman

This folk trio is relatively new to the scene, with their self-titled debut album being released in 2020. Marked by unique vocals and flowing harmonies, Bonny Light Horseman is definitely an up-and-coming artist to watch out for.

Rhiannon Giddens

Rhiannon Giddens got her start in the old-time string band Carolina Chocolate Drops. However, she has since started a solo career that boasts five studio albums, including two partnered with Italian instrumentalist Francesco Turrisi. Her music brings folk back to its roots while maintaining a modern flair.
