8 Trend Predictions for Spring: Grab These Looks Before It’s Too Late

It's the beginning of spring, and everyone is excited to see the new trends this season brings. As spring cleaning removes unwanted clothing in your closet, prepare to fill that new space with some of these trendy pieces. Below, we have compiled a list of eight trend predictions to prepare you for spring.

1. Sheer Clothing

This spring’s most significant trend is bound to be sheer clothing. This trend will be popular amongst everyone, from mesh shirts to crochet dresses. Individuals often style sheer clothing over nude undergarments—commonly seen in today’s streetwear. However, you can also style sheer pieces over slip dresses or tank tops for a more modest look.

The sheer trend was seen in many designer collections on the runway this season, including Marc Jacobs, Rick Owens, Chanel, Coperni, and more. This spring, fashionistas alike will “free the nip” and test the boundaries of risqué clothing.

2. 70’s clothing

With the release of Daisy Jones and The Six, there is no doubt that 70s clothing will return this spring. People will likely participate in this trend by wearing suede, denim, crochet, bell sleeves, flared pants, flowy silhouettes, platform boots, psychedelic patterns, and clothing with fringe.

Look to 70s icons such as Pam Grier, Stevie Nicks, Farrah Fawcett, David Bowie, and Mick Jagger for fashion inspiration. Live out your “Gold Dust Woman” dreams this spring by wearing your favorite 70s pieces.

3. Maxi Skirts and Dresses

Are you looking for an item that can be casual or formal? Add a maxi skirt or dress to your shopping list, and you will be well-prepared for any spring event. Maxi skirts and dresses come in many fabrics, although denim is the most popular.

For a casual look, pair the maxi dress or skirt with a white t-shirt, a leather jacket, and Doc Martens or a pair of Adidas Samba. Pair a maxi dress with a trench coat or blazer and high-heeled boots for a more formal look. Experiment with accessories such as layered jewelry, sunglasses, neck-ties, and chain belts.

4. Drop Waist Skirts and Dresses

The 70s isn’t the only fashion era returning this spring—say “hello” to the 80s. Drop waist styles were spotted in many 2023 collections, including Versace, Carolina Herrera, and Gabriela Hearst.

You can find this trend in maxi, midi, and mini lengths, allowing you to style the silhouette in various ways. The drop waist dresses, in particular, sometimes give the illusion of a corset—perhaps society is reentering the Bridgerton-inspired aesthetic, also known as “regency-core.”

Whether you plan to participate in this trend or not, prepare to see a lot of drop-waist styles at spring weddings and garden parties this year.

5. Denim on Denim

Denim should be a year-round staple in your closet, but if it isn't, purchase some this spring. It’s safe to say that denim is everywhere. Between runway shows and paparazzi photos, I have whiplash from trying to see all of the denim outfits this season.

This spring, embrace popular denim items such as trench coats, jump-suits, cargos, maxi skirts, vests, boots, heels, and purses—don’t be afraid to pair some of these items together.

6. Vests

There are many fun ways to style a vest—why wouldn't you want to buy one? Whether your style is business-casual, 70s-inspired, streetwear, or rockstar chic, there is a vest for you. This article of clothing quickly elevates any outfit by layering a different fabric or pattern. Moreover, you can style a vest for casual or formal settings.

For business-casual outfits, try adding a tailored vest over a bralette— you can leave the vest open to showcase the bralette or keep it closed so the vest stands out. If you prefer a 70s look, layer a suede vest with fringe over a crochet or tight-fitted tank top.

As for streetwear style, layer an oversized fleece, cargo, or tailored vest over a hoodie or oversized t-shirt. If you love the rockstar aesthetic, pair a leather vest with straight-leg leather pants or a mini skirt with fishnet tights.

7. Capri pants

Capris are a controversial trend to resurface, much like UGGs. Whether you hate capris or love them, trend forecasters predict they are returning. Follow in the footsteps of Bella Hadid by styling a pair of capris with heeled sandals to embrace the warm weather of days to come. If sandals aren’t your thing, experiment styling capri pants with a pointed-toe kitten heel or sneakers.

Currently, cargo capris are particularly trendy, but denim and tailored capris are starting to make their way into consumers’ hands quickly—buy a pair while you can!

8. Colors

Pantone released the top 10 colors that you should be wearing this season. Therefore, if none of these clothing trends spoke to your style but you still want to be on trend, invest in this spring’s most popular colors.

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of Pantone Color Institute, explains, “Colors for Spring/Summer 2023 are recalibrated for the new era we are entering. Blending escapism with reality, wholesomeness, and joy, we embrace the exploration of extreme contrast in mood and color,” Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of Pantone Color Institute, explains.
