Dookie was Green Day’s third studio album preceded by 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours and Kerplunk!. However, it was their first album recorded with a major record label, Reprise Records. The album has been hugely successful with the original selling over 15 million copies worldwide.

Without Dookie, the music of the 90s would have never been the same. Green Day is widely known to have popularized the pop punk music that is still so influential. In a time where grunge bands like Nirvana were dominating the airways, Dookie brought in a lyrically and sonically fast-paced punk vibe that was quite different from anything else.

Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has spoken a lot on the personal topics explored throughout the album. Armstrong wrote about his own struggles of coming to terms with his bisexuality, particularly in the 11th track “Coming Clean”. He also pointed out his own mental health struggles with anxiety and panic attacks. While the album is about many dark topics, Armstrong’s witty humor allows for an upbeat, adolescent burnout energy that is quite infectious.

Following Dookie, Green Day shot to mainstream popularity and went on to release 10 more studio albums with the latest being released in 2020. The band has sold over 75 million records worldwide and continues to be a major musical influence. Other popular hits from varying albums include “American Idiot”, “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)”, and “21 Guns”. Green Day’s huge success paved the way for other pop punk bands such as Blink-182, Yellowcard, Sum 41, and many others.

Dookie’s 30th anniversary album comes with the addition of ten 4-track demos, seven cassette demos, six outtake recordings, and many new live recordings from Woodstock 1994. The limited edition six LP vinyl box set and the four CD box set are both available to purchase from Green Day’s website. The album is also available on Spotify and Apple Music.
