How to Embrace Your Inner Witch

While watching a new show, you might have noticed that some of the characters are witches. Spiritual and mystical aesthetics have become very popular in the past few years. There’s been an influx of media where witches are main characters and protagonists, rather than cast-aside antagonists. Music with beautifully crafted, spellbinding, lyrics has had a rise in popularity as well. It has been about a decade since witches were having their moment in mainstream media, but not to worry, because they are back and better than ever.

To be a witch is to empower both yourself and others. The world needs to see strong, female characters, and we can find these characters through women who happen to be a little magical. Spirituality has also created a community. Those who practice it or feel connected to it bond with others over their shared love of the divine.

And who doesn’t love a little magic in their life? We may feel lighter when we think that magic might be surrounding or aiding us in a time of crisis. So to help you get into the spirit (no pun intended) of Halloween, I’m here to provide you with some recommendations of recent media and music that have all of the witchy vibes.

A series that is the epitome of a well-made show about witches is Agatha All Along. Agatha All Along is the spin-off Marvel show based on the character Agatha Harkness, from their limited series WandaVision. Agatha is a witty, clever, and powerful witch who believes she doesn’t need a coven to survive, but ultimately ends up gaining one and finding community along the way.

Agatha is on a quest to regain the extent of her powers, so the amount of magic and witchcraft is off the charts. The show is filled with relationship drama, brilliant evil plans, and heartfelt moments—plus you’ll finish this limited series wanting more but loving what you got.

Within the past few months, we have witness the release of the—highly anticipated—second season of T.V. show Wednesday.

In this season, the spirituality and essence of magic have skyrocketed compared to the first season. Wednesday finds out who her new spirit guide is, she regains her psychic powers after they have faded away, and audiences get the chance to learn more about both Wednesday and Morticia’s psychic abilities. This sophomore season leans into the horror and magical elements of Nevermore Academy and its occupants. It is the perfect watch to get you into that spooky mood.

Spirituality can also be spotted in music. The latest album from pop icon Lady Gaga—released earlier this year—is where you can find it. Titled “Mayhem,” the entire album has undercurrents of magic and the powerfulness that comes with strong, witchy women.

Although the whole album holds mystic vibes, two songs in particular lean into the theme of witchcraft the most. According to Gaga, “Abracadabra,”one of the singles on the album, is a song about finding magic in the challenges of life.

The other song is “The Dead Dance,” which debuted in an episode of the second season of Wednesday. Its connection to the iconic show gives the song a feeling of magic. If you haven’t seen the dance performance of this song featured in the episode, I highly recommend watching it!

There is one artist who—regardless when she last released music—will always be the white witch of music and her name is Stevie Nicks. The way that she presents herself as an artist leans into this persona. Her stage attire of flowy skirts and shawls, gives off an enchanting and magical impression. She even appeared on the season of American Horror Story called “Coven”, portraying herself but as a witch. While she was part of the band Fleetwood Mac, she wrote a song called “Rhiannon” that tells the legend of a Welsh witch.

Other songs she has written such as “Crystal” and “If You Ever Did Believe” are songs that further cement her status as one of the main witches of music. She sang these two songs as a solo artist for the movie Practical Magic—an essential movie for this holiday season.

Speaking of the 1998 movie Practical Magic, the long-awaited sequel just finished filming this past summer. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are back starring as the sister/witch duo. The film is set to release in September of 2026, so be sure to mark your calendars. And be ready to watch the movie that is bringing more iconic witchiness to the world.

Witches aren’t always as bad as they seem. Both Gaga and Nicks continue to provide constant inspiration to those who feel drawn to the spiritual. Characters in Wednesday and Agatha All Along show how important community is.

As we are nearing the holiday of Halloween, it is time to embrace your inner witch. With these recommendations, you can sit down and watch a show or listen to an artist with those in your own community—your fellow witches.
