Astrology & Fashion: The Cult of Trends

We often use different ideologies and theories to cope with the struggles of our human experience. These ideologies, such as astrology, are often used as expressive art forms in fashion.

One fashion trend in particular has sparked conversations over the last year: Introducing Venus, ruling the zodiac of Libra, and its corresponding trend, "Dressing For Your Venus Sign." on TikTok.  This trend is heavily based on the myths of astrology and is specific to only one out of twelve placements.

The concept of dressing for a certain placement is fun because you can find new aesthetics that may suit you. This is not to say that you can't have fun with your personal style—it is just something that may not work for you.

We often get lost in what the internet tries to tell us, for example asking questions online like "What are we wearing this Summer?" Which comes from a place of insecurity in not keeping up with trends.

Trends have existed for as long as fashion has existed. It's human nature to feed into what people deem to be cool. But a lot of the time, it is something that gets tired way too quickly.

The point of dressing for any of your placements in your astrological birth chart is to help find your sense of style and identity. Often, those who find peace with astrology because it comes from a place where they find their identity.

Poet and lover of astrology and spirituality, Brianna Colmenares, has a fresh perspective on what exactly astrology is and how it has helped her find her identity. One thing’s for sure: it is not about finding your aesthetic using Pinterest.

Studying astrology for 12 years, she has gained a tremendous amount of insight into all of the astrological placements, houses, and even tarot.

Finding your identity can feel like a lifetime in your developmental years, “astrology became interesting to me when I was starting to question who I was. In my pre-teen years when you’re figuring out who you were, astrology became a tool for me to do so.”

Going into astrology close-minded and with set expectations is a mistake that won’t get you far. Not many people like to believe that astrology is specifically catered to you. It’s your guide to your identity. It won’t tell you your future or how you will die. It’s so much more than that—of course, it is for you to be open to believe in.

“This trend is simply color theory in a different font. Everything has energy, and we have always subconsciously dressed for the energy we want to embody,” Colmenares states in response to what this trend is making people believe. These things can be considered myths as many don’t actually know what dressing for any one of your placement signs means.

The concept of this trend is not necessarily awful—it is the misguided information being brought to those who are not educated on astrology. The study and art of astrology are not just aesthetic—it’s the reason for so many individuals’ journeys to finding themselves.

An open mind is a great way to think of this trend: “Regarding myths spread within the trend of "dressing for your Venus sign," it's essential to approach astrology with a balanced perspective.” Colmenares continues to make the fascinating point that “Astrological placements, like the Venus sign, can indeed influence personal style preferences to some extent.”

Myths represented in this trend are harmful in the sense that it furthers the agenda of it not being real when, to some, it’s their entire lives.

The myths lie in not dressing for the specific placement but solely for that. People often think that dressing this way, as the planet of love, will “automatically attract love or bring specific outcomes.”

Dressing in what you are comfortable in and what your placements specifically say about you is how you draw inspiration from this trend.

Although there is no specific outcome or guideline for dressing for a specific zodiac placement, it is still free for you to utilize the creativity of self-expression.

But what does dressing for your Venus sign even mean? Well, as it is the planet of love, Venus represents all things beauty, aesthetics, and personal expression. This can give perceptions into the types of clothing, color palettes, and specific fashion styles that resonate with an individual.

An example of this would be “someone with Venus in Leo may be drawn to bold, dramatic, and luxurious fashion choices, while someone with Venus in Libra may have a preference for balanced and harmonious aesthetics,” as Colmenares explains with thought.

Continuing to expand on her thoughts of styling outfits based on your Venus sign.

“If I were going on a date or trying to make a great impression, I would dress according to my Venus sign. It's similar to auditioning to be a model—you want to look your absolute best, and dressing to align with your Venus sign can help you attract those opportunities.”

Showcasing the planet Venus in any aspect will make you as magnetic as ever. Though, that may not be the person you are, hence why this trend wouldn’t be applicable to everyone.

Colmenares emphasizes that this is, most times, not the only quality people look for in the dating world: “Someone you're dating might appreciate you for who you are naturally, which aligns more with your rising sign's style than your Venus sign.”

Your confidence in your sense of fashion and self will also mostly always play a part in your allure.

“In terms of confidence, dressing in a way that aligns with your astrological placements can enhance self-expression and make you feel more authentic and comfortable. When you feel good about how you present yourself, it can positively impact your self-confidence and overall well-being.”

Trends are just trends at the end of the day. It could be something you really enjoy taking part in—but differentiating what you truly like and what you don’t is the path you want to stay on.

Losing yourself because of what society tells you what to wear, buy, and look like is easy. Standing your ground and knowing what is authentic to the person you are will forever be the most important part of gaining self-confidence.

“The influence of a single placement, such as the Venus sign, should not be taken as the sole determinant of personal style. Colmenares remains to see what is important, no matter if it is the “next cool thing to be doing.” Continuing, “Individual preferences, cultural influences, and personal experiences also play significant roles in shaping one's fashion choices.”

The concept of astrology will forever make its mark on fashion, with trends like these always coming around, designs based on astrological placements, and the influence of the zodiac—believe it or not.

It’s ok to follow trends like these as long as it’s a reflection of the person you are and of course, if it’s something you believe in. And if the cute slideshow edits of what you should be wearing for your specific Venus signs spark inspiration in you, that’s perfectly ok.

This is not about forcing the idea of astrology onto anyone; it is for anyone to enjoy, after all. So have your fun and see what cute styles or new trends you come up with.

Though astrology is something unique and authentic to you, as complex as it is, it is something that can change your life—and hey, it’s a fun way to use your free time.
