Bigger is Better: Beata Rydbacken’s Unusual Approach to Accessories
Swedish designers have been turning everyday accessories into oversized statement pieces. From giant hair clips to custom designs, they have been purposefully created for Spanish artist, Rosalía.
The Little Details
In a fashion world obsessed with making a statement, Beata Rydbacken finds inspiration in the smallest details. The Swedish designer’s pieces evoke the feeling of dressing up your childhood Barbie doll, when the accessories became more exciting than the outfit itself. From 3D-printed oversized hair clips to giant studded belts and braid-shaped scarves, she turns the smallest parts of an outfit into the main event.

“I see myself as a spokesperson for the small, forgotten-about details. I give them a voice, and the space and attention they deserve,” Rydbacken says in an interview with IRK magazine.
The Big Clip Effect
Rydbacken had been designing collections since 2021, but it was not until TikTok got ahold of her Big Clip Hoodie that things really started to take off. Featuring her signature pink, purple, and white clips in place of a traditional zipper, the hoodie turned an everyday garment into something instantly recognizable.
The Big Clip began with a seemingly silly request to a friend with a 3D printer: Could you make me a giant hair clip? The hoodie came about just as casually, when Rydbacken and her boyfriend started experimenting with the clips and an old sweatshirt.
Part of the appeal is how familiar the clips feel. The excitement lies in the disproportion of an everyday object and how it becomes the centerpiece of the outfit.
A Bigger Stage
Rosalía, the Spanish singer, had her stylist, Jose Carayol, reach out to borrow one of Rydbacken’s pieces. A hat made entirely out of blonde hair. Rydbacken then discovered that Rosalía had worn it weeks later when someone sent her a paparazzi photo in said wig. The collaboration eventually grew into a custom piece for Rosalía’s LUX tour, with Rydbacken’s mom flying to Barcelona to deliver it herself.

Rydbacken also designed a Coachella outfit for Swedish pop star, Zara Larsson, but the piece never arrived in time, getting stuck in US customs. In a screenshot of the shipping tracker shared with Dazed Magazine, Rydbacken stated that the outfit was still stuck there, and joked that she had cried over the situation.
Though humorous, the story really shows the realities of gaining traction online. Social media is only a start. A post can get a designer noticed, but getting a piece from the screen onto the people wearing it is an entirely different story.
A Nod to Nostalgia
Scale is one thing that defines Rydbacken’s work, and so is nostalgia. Her designs evoke the feeling of the 2012 Tumblr era. This was when Claire’s and Justice were full of colorful prints and when mustache graphics and thick-rimmed glasses were considered cool. It was a time of playful aesthetics that were awkwardly authentic. A time when personal style was less about looking polished, and more about wearing whatever felt exciting, no matter how excessive or embarrassing it might seem looking back.
That spirit comes through in her giant pom-pom hats, and Justin Bieber-printed tank top. Rather than simply recreating these references as throwback pieces, Rydbacken is drawing on things that she was genuinely obsessed with, describing them as moments that hold a special place in her heart.
In IRK magazine’s interview, Rydbacken mentioned that when making the 2026 collection, the 2016 aesthetic was not yet trending. Nostalgia, she said, entered her work organically. Her designs tap into the pleasure of revisiting things once dismissed as childish or uncool, and finding new ways to embrace them.
Rydbacken's work is about taking familiar objects, memories, and cultural references and giving them a new form. By enlarging the details most people overlook, she makes room for the things that might otherwise be dismissed as trivial. The smallest part of the outfit becomes the whole point.
