The MVP of NYC Winter: Balaclava
In the freezing trenches of the Crimean War, British soldiers struggled to keep warm. They clung to each other, shivered together, and prayed for warmth. Their prayers were answered by a knitted headgear, made to protect their heads, ears, mouths, and noses. The soldiers named the godsend item after the town where they camped in the cold: Balaklava, Ukraine. The first use of the balaklava (commonly spelled balaclava) was in the 1850s, however the term “balaclava” wasn’t coined until 1881 during the Boer War, where it gained popularity.

Whether you have seen balaclavas out on the streets or not, you might recognize them better through their use in winter sports. Balaclavas are often used by skiers and snowboarders to block out the harsh wind and prevent windburn. They can also provide vital protection from the sun. Many skiers and snowboarders often sport a “ski tan” or “goggle tan” if they don’t wear full coverage masks like the balaclava.
These masks have been around for a while, but only recently have they become an edition to the fashion world. Cute, knitted designs are covering social media algorithms and marketplaces. This is a perfect example of the constant innovation and reinvention of historic clothing pieces. Re-designing is an important part in the evolution of fashion, to make current products match consumer wants and needs. As we know, trends come and go often, but because of the essencial use of this accesoty, I think this is a purchase worth making.
