The Mythology of Metals

Gold and silver have carried powerful meanings across history. From ancient civilizations to luxurious accessories, these metals have provided value to societies from around the world. So how has gold and silver come to be as valuable as they are today?

Gold originally developed from the fiery furnaces of dying stars. The metal quite literally crashed into Earth from supernova explosions in space. Gold has been found majorly in America (the California Gold Rush), but gold artifacts date all the way back to Ancient Egyptian civilizations. In Ancient Egyptian societies, gold was referred to as “the flesh of the Gods” and was rumored to have abilities to harness energy from the Sun. In Mesopotamian civilizations, gold was first used for jewelry pieces. and currency. Many other cultures throughout the years had spiritual and religious associations with gold. For example, in Chinese culture gold was seen as a symbol for good luck and prosperity. The Incas saw gold as “the sweat of the Sun.” The precious metal is still seen as a symbol of wealth and prosperity; it can represent love and purity, but it also signifies power and energy.

Silver is the opposite of gold in many ways. Their use as a form of currency is the only similarity between these metals. One key difference between the metals is its solar associations. Unlike gold, silver was often associated with the moon in Ancient Egyptian cultures. This association is still prevalent in today’s society, since we see many silver moon-based-designs. Silver is also used to signify technological advancements and modernity. This metal holds a large connection to folklore—specifically vampires. In certain cultures, silver will be worn as a talisman because of this connection to protect from evil entities.

Investing in real gold and silver can be difficult because of its rarity and value. However, maybe saving up for that special piece (instead of buying tarnishable trash in bulk) is worth more.

Whether you want to feel protected from evil or energized by the sun, both these different metals carry a lot of significance with them. For many people, these metals are devices of worship and manifestation. So why not bring some of that intention into your jewelry today?
