Beauty on Vinyl

Music has a way of shaping how we want to look just as much as how we want to feel. The connection between sound and aesthetic, pairing different albums and artists with looks that match their energy. Some songs call for something soft and effortless, others feel sharper, darker, more intentional. It is about building a look around a mood, treating getting ready like part of the listening experience. The same way a track can shift your mindset, it can shift how you present yourself, turning beauty into something more expressive and personal.
Here are some of my top albums I get ready to, based on the beauty look, and feeling I want to achieve:
PORTISHEAD— Portishead

The best way to describe not only the artists, but these albums and songs themselves is moody, sensual, and enigmatic. One of my favorite songs from “Through The Devil Softly” is named “Trouble,” and a separate song by them: “Salt of the Sea.” From Portishead, one of my favorites is called “All Mine”. Other recommendations: Erika De Casier and Massive Attack. All these albums are ones I enjoy listening to on a day-to-day basis, but especially when I am getting ready for a night out. I like to allow myself to relax, tap back into my divine feminine, and have my makeup match the vibe, too. If you are looking to feel and look like you just cast a love spell over yourself, these are the albums for you.

Practically every morning, this is the music that is playing to get me out of bed and get ready. I have embedded some of my favorite artists from different albums in the name: Pink Floyd, The Cure, Chris Isaak, Sade, Carole King, The Beatles, Gary Moore, Led Zeppelin, Fiona Apple, Marvin Gaye, Lauryn Hill, The Strokes, Bee Gees, Fleetwood Mac, all the above. Maybe it’s what I grew up on, or what is stuffed in my vinyl player case, but either way, if you are in a slump or want to brighten your beauty routine, here it is. In a way, it makes me feel more alive, which drives me to get more creative with my look.

R&B is one of my top genres, so these albums are playing pretty consistently for me. It feels like beauty looks better slightly undone, intimate, and low-lit. Alternative R&B has created its own visual language that flows with every beat on the tracks. Artists like Sonder, Brent Faiyaz, Bryson Tiller, Summer Walker, Sabrina Claudio, SZA, Solange, The Internet, Kwn, and of course, Jhene & PND create an energy of a beauty look that feels effortless yet intentional at the same time.
Beauty works the same way music does: it reflects emotion, memory, and identity. The albums we play while getting ready become part of the atmosphere, shaping not only the mood of the moment but the way we choose to present ourselves. Whether it is a glossy lip paired with smooth R&B, dark eyeliner with something more sultry, or creative makeup inspired by invigorating tracks, the connection between sound and style makes beauty feel more personal, and hopefully, a part of your experience while getting ready to start the day or start your night out.
