Fall Comfort Movies

There’s nothing quite like curling up on the couch on a cold, autumn day with a warm blanket and your favorite comfort movie playing. The quintessential fall movie usually involves a nice backdrop of the leaves changing, some pumpkin picking, and maybe a love interest or two.

  1. Mystic Pizza (1988)

The first movie that comes to mind with the perfect East Coast autumn background is Mystic Pizza starring Julia Roberts, Annabeth Gish, and Lili Taylor. This movie focuses on two sisters, Daisy and Kat, and their best friend Jojo during the fall after they graduate high school. It follows them as they all work at a pizza parlor together called Mystic Pizza and navigate the complications of love and their life plans after high school.

2. Dead poet’s society (1989)

In this film, Robin Williams plays John Keating, an English teacher at a stuffy all boys prep school who wants to inspire his students to think outside the box by teaching them to have fun with poetry from Lord Byron to Henry David Thoreau to Walt Whitman. He helps his students momentarily escape the pressure of going to an elite school and realize that they can forge their own paths in life. Two students in particular, Neil Perry and Todd Anderson, and their friends become enamored with Mr. Keating and he helps them all to make big changes to their lives.

3. Twitches (2005)

Twitches is a Disney Channel original movie that’s perfect for when you’re feeling nostalgic for the simpler days of childhood. This movie follows identical twin sisters, Camryn and Alex, who were separated at birth and adopted by different families. They are reunited on their 21st birthday only to discover they are witches who have to find their birth mother and save the magical dimension they are really from.

4. When Harry Met sally (1989)

When Harry Met Sally is a classic romcom about Harry and Sally who meet right as they graduate from the University of Chicago and then road trip to New York City together. On the drive, they disagree that women and men can’t just be friends because Harry thinks that sex complicates friendships. During the next few years, they cross paths many more times while they are dating other people and continue to disagree about friendships. They eventually end up being friends but drama ensues.

5. The Perks of being a wallflower (2012)

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a movie based on the coming-of-age novel written by Steven Chbosky that was initially published in 1999. The film follows 15-year-old outsider Charlie as he tries to find his place in high school and the world. Two seniors, Sam and Patrick, befriend Charlie and with them, he experiences the teenage angst of first love, parties, drugs, and mental health issues. Throughout the film, Charlie chronicles his experiences and feelings in letters to an unnamed friend.

6. Stuck in love (2013)

Stuck in Love follows a father, William, and his two kids, Rusty and Samantha, as they struggle to navigate love and life despite the hardships it throws at them. William is an author who hasn’t been able to write anything since his ex-wife left him for another man. Rusty is dealing with the trials and tribulations of being a teenager and falling in love for the first time. Samantha is a writer like her father who has a cynical view on love because of her parent’s divorce but meets a sweet guy named Lou who wants nothing more than to be with her.

7. Casper (1995)

Casper is a great movie for a fun yet spooky Halloween movie night. After her father passes away, heiress Carrigan Crittenden finds out that her wealthy father only left his old manor in his will, but she discovers that there is supposedly treasure hidden in the walls. The house is haunted by a friendly ghost named Casper and his uncles: Stretch, Fatso, and Stinkie who want to scare the humans out of the house. Carrigan hires Dr. James Harvey, who is a paranormal therapist, to get rid of the ghosts while living in the house with his teenage daughter Kat who Casper befriends. The film follows them as they try to help the ghosts cross over to the other side.

No matter what your taste in movies is, there is something for you to enjoy during the fall from romcoms to fantasy so get comfortable and enjoy one of these many fall movies!
