Claudia Li: The Chinese Woman Breaking The Rules Of Winter Fashion

When thinking of fashion in the wintertime, we think of being warm—but fashionable. Most importantly, we tend to stick to a more neutral color palette when it comes to our wardrobe. Colors such as black, brown, burgundy, and olive greens are always the go-to color when shopping for winter—but that may not be the case anymore. CLAUDIA LI debuted her colorful, show-stopping womenswear Fall/Winter 2021 collection. Consisting of hot pinks, lemon yellows, grays, and color-blocked fur coats, it immediately caught the eyes of many in the industry. The collection is proving the trend of bright hues for winter is here to stay.

Claudia Li is an Asian woman who first debuted her Fall collection at New York Fashion Week in 2015. She was born in China and raised in New Zealand and Singapore. Before becoming the renowned designer she is today, she worked in London designing for J.W. Anderson. Later, she came to New York to earn her Master's degree at Parsons School of Design. Known for her bold patterns and bright color palettes within her luxury brand, Claudia Li began to tip the scale when it came to Fall/Winter.

When it comes to putting out a Fall/Winter collection, designers tend to stick to silhouettes and color palettes that are ideal for that specific season. Specifically for the 2021 Winter season, the “HOMECOMING” collection breaks all the rules of winter attire. Claudia Li showcased over-the-top dresses, matching two-piece sets, women’s suits, furs, and jumpers. The overall idea of wearing bold looks in the winter is unconventional, but it goes to show that clothing-lovers are craving something new. Most importantly, it's not sweatpants.

Fashion lovers use the way they dress as a form of self-expression. However, amidst a global pandemic, that was traded in for comfort and staying home. That may still be the case, but hopefully not for much longer. CLAUDIA LI’s “HOMECOMING” collection shows that it’s okay to be bold and fashionable in the winter. No longer must you cave into the basic neutral tones and rules that were set by fast-fashion shops and designers.

CLAUDIA LI’s Fall/Winter collection is something unique and fresh—something we all needed. Playing it safe was the way to go before, but now that we are all dying to get back to our fashionable lives, we need designers like Claudia Li who are not afraid to take risks. We need designers who break down the barriers of the industry and the barriers set within their own community.
