Fire Walks With Z: Gossip Girl 1.04 Recap

Birthdays are always special, whether it’s your 1st, 15th, or 50th. But in the world of Gossip Girl trouble and mischief will always ensue.

It’s Zoya’s 15th birthday, and all she wants is for it to be kept a secret Of course with Gossip Girl, nothing is kept secret does, and unfortunately for Zoya, her birthday is also the anniversary of her mother’s death. I can’t even imagine how Zoya is feeling, as she believes it’s her fault her mother died giving birth to her.

Obie however, didn’t get the memo, he’s rented out food trucks all along Fifth Ave, making it known it’s Zoya’s special day. The only gift Zoya will be receiving this year is an eviction notice, courtesy of Luna and Monet.

Julien attempts to keep the peace by wishing Zoya a Happy Birthday, but of course, Zoya takes it as sarcasm given what this day also is. This ensues another sister war, in which Monet and Luna have been anticipating.

Meanwhile, Aki and Audrey are avoiding each other. But can we blame them? Aki is afraid Audrey has been cheating on him with other guys, and Audrey is afraid Aki may no longer be attracted to her. Instead of talking it out, the two decide the best option is to avoid each other as long as possible.

The man behind their trouble, Max, has been missing for a week. After his daddy issues blew up in his face, he decided to hide his pain underneath pills. Other than Aki and Audrey endlessly contacting him, Rafa (the teacher he’s been pursuing) is also concerned. He even asks GG if she happens to know where Max is.

Once Max emerges, Rafa can see how badly this daddy issue has impacted him. He attempts to be there for him, but as Max approaches Rafa in the gym locker room, Rafa seems like he’s had enough.

Back to the sister war, Zoya finds an unexpected ally with Milo Sparks. You may recognize that last name, and yes, this is Georgina’s son. Who better to confide in than the son of trouble? My only other option would be Henry Bass, but of course, he’s yet to make an appearance.

Julien teams up with Audrey, Luna, and Monet to find a way to get back at Zoya. She realizes she’s yet to use the video we learned about in episode 2, and what better way to get her back than massively embarrassing her at a party at Webster Hall? To make it even worse, she decides to dedicate it in their mother’s honor. Kind of cruel, if you ask me.

Zoya and Obie face trouble in paradise as Zoya becomes consumed in the war. And it doesn’t get much better when the dads of Zoya and Julien decide this has to be a joint party, not just one thrown by Julien.

At the party, Audrey parades around with a date for the night in order to make Aki jealous. Little does she know, her date happens to be gay, and he thinks Aki is too. Hearing the assumption from her date’s mouth is enough to confront him, and surprise-surprise, the two work things out. Will we ever not see these two resolve an issue within one episode?

Max is also attempting to get into the party, but Rafa stops him. He managed to get Max’s name removed from the list and uses it as a way to get Max to talk to his dad and deal with their family issues.

The battle of the two sisters grows as Milo decides to drug Julien. He’s found a way to put Alcosynth (which mimics the feeling of being drunk) in her food. I guess drugging people runs in the family. By the end of the night, she’ll be so wasted without a sip of alcohol. My biggest question is how is a ten-year-old getting these drugs?

The big sister show down begins when Julien goes to give her speech for the night. Julien ends her speech with showing the clip of Zoya. In the video, we see that Zoya had been spray painting “fuck school” in the halls with some of her friends. The video turns horribly wrong when the director’s cut (which Luna and Monet of course had to add) shows how Zoya’s “friends” locked her in a room and called her a mother killer. It was pretty disturbing, and honestly, I hate that the show added this in. It went way too far, and I just hope Zoya gets back at those two mean girls.

When Julien realizes what’s going on, she stops the video. She adds on to her speech about how she’s a bully and will never let this happen again.

Her realization ends up in her amending with Zoya. Their amends also lead to fixing things between Zoya and Obie. Maybe things really do have to get worse before they can get better.

The night ends with Zoya and Julien celebrating together. And on another part of the Island, Max is showing up at Rafa’s door. He explains that the talk with his dad went horribly wrong, which leads to Max finally getting what he wants––in Rafa’s pants.

Maybe next week we’ll see a two-on-two battle, Luna and Monet versus Julien and Zoya. Maybe Rafa and Max will really start a forbidden love affair. Maybe Aki and Audrey will find something that actually keeps them apart. But for now, we’ll just have to wait till Thursday.

Xoxo.
