Autumn/Winter 2022 Accessory Trend Report

It’s almost the most wonderful time of the year again. No, it’s not quite Christmas—but the Autumn/Winter season is approaching. We know some of us are still holding on to summer and those barely-there outfits like mini skirts and spaghetti straps, but with September beginning, new trends to follow or to keep in the “undecided” pile of your fashion-obsessed mind are popping up.

From chunky bangles to over-the-knee boots and all things metallic, here are the accessory trends you’ll need to know for this Autumn/Winter season.

This accessory trend for the A/W season should definitely not come as a surprise, since fluffy and furry materials are an absolute must-have for cooler weather. This season, everything fur/fluff is in; from fluffy slides and mules like the Marni Calf-Hair slippers to furry hats as showcased in Gucci and LaQuan Smith’s F/W’22 shows. Fluffy and furry accessories can be worn with just about anything to spice up your autumn and winter look. If you haven’t bought into the trend prior to this upcoming A/W season, now is definitely the time.

SOMEWHERE OVER-THE-KNEE

Over-the-knee boots are definitely more of a timeless piece than a trend, however, they always seem to go in and out of style every now and then. For this A/W season, they are in fact in style. Every over-the-knee boot silhouette you could imagine from tight-leather to loose suede will be a check on the A/W accessories hot list. If you still have your pair of thigh-high boots from 2017, try giving them some love again in a new, 2022 kind of way.

Belts have been a staple accessory for quite some time, so it was no surprise to see them trending on the runway. However, for this upcoming A/W season, not one, but double-belted looks are trending. Think Y2K, but much more versatile. You can totally experiment with this trend and either take the Diesel route or go for a more laid-back, classic look as shown in the Miu Miu A/W’22 show. Belts are super easy to thrift if you do not own any already and want to partake in the double belt trend for this upcoming A/W season.

Business-wear is a trend that has been storming the runways for a while now, so it did not come as a shock to see brands like Gucci and Louis Vuitton implement ties into their A/W’22 collections. From skinny ties to chunky Dad-esque silhouettes, ties are absolutely one of the biggest accessory trends for this A/W season. Ties are super easy to style; whether you are going for a more casual vibe or trying to achieve that Gossip Girl worthy prep attire.

Long, over-the-knee socks is another trend that has been seen both on and off the runway for a hot minute. Paired with everything from rain boots to slingback heels and the controversial ballet flat, wearing long socks under all of your shoes this fall and winter are a definite yes. Chanel, Coperni, and many other designers did not hesitate when deciding to include socks in their A/W collections. If you do not own a pair already, check your local dollar stores, H&M’s, or Amazon to get your hands on some—just before the colder weather approaches.

GO CHUNKY OR GO HOME

Perhaps one of the biggest trends for this A/W season is chunky jewelry, specifically chunky bangles. Bangles were seen everywhere on this year’s A/W runways, and we could not be any happier. Chunky jewelry is almost always trendy for the fall and winter. However, this season, we are seeing it in a much chunkier light. Thicker chains, bigger pearls, large bracelets, and so much more are a major trend for this A/W season. If you put together a boring or “basic” outfit, throwing chunky jewelry on will instantly take the look from basic, to basic-chic.

SAY IT WITH A STATEMENT

Another trend that is already popular for this A/W is statement jewelry pieces. We have all seen the statement puffy glass heart pendant necklaces trending on TikTok and Pinterest, so we’re sure many of you have already bought into this trend. This upcoming season’s runway shows proved that if you want to say something, the only acceptable, and fashionable way to do it is by wearing a crazy, fabulous piece of statement jewelry. From gaudy cross necklaces to animal pendants, any statement piece will work for this A/W season.

Metallics are a staple for this upcoming A/W season. From clothing to accessories, metallic everything is going to rule your wardrobe. Metallic shoes, bags, jewelry, and more should definitely be on your list of trends to buy into. Sticking to a darker color palette is still doable when looking into metallic pieces. Shades like copper, amber, chocolate, chartreuse, black, and more would work perfectly for your A/W metallic palette.

We could not do an A/W accessory trend report without adding at least one handbag trend, and we went with slim bags. Slim bags are the perfect choice for anyone who does not like to carry anything but still wants a little something to keep an essential lip gloss or chapstick in. Not to mention, a bag always adds something extra to a boring outfit. While oversized bags are definitely still in for this fall and winter, slimmer bags have made a name for themselves with designers like Acne Studios and Givenchy showcasing them in their collections.

Finishing off this trend report strong, the last trend we have to mention are futuristic sunglasses. For the past year, oversized, bug-like sunglasses have been the biggest style that was trending on the runway for both A/W and S/S. While those are still hot on the sunglass market, futuristic styles are a lot more popular for this A/W season. Acne Studios showcased futuristic sunglasses in their A/W’22 collection that were very reminiscent of films like The Matrix, and Diesel provided us with nothing short of futuristic-spy vibes for their A/W’22 collection. If you are going to make any new purchases for your new wardrobe, then futuristic sunglasses should definitely be on the top of the list.
