Curiouser and Curiouser: Viktor & Rolf's Spring/Summer 2023 Couture Collection

The Paris haute couture shows thus far have proved that fashion can push many exciting, and sometimes contentious boundaries. From faux animal heads on dresses to unscheduled fashion shows, there have been many memorable moments to count. Arguably, the most unforgettable moment from this season’s Paris haute couture shows would come from Viktor and Rolf’s Spring/Summer 2023 Couture collection, where an array of topsy-turvy ballgowns were displayed.

The design duo Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren are no strangers to conveying satisfactory moments on the runway from the strange doll heads showcased in the autumn/winter 2017 collection, the “No photos, please” meme-inspired gowns from the spring/summer 2019 collection, or more recently the dramatically exaggerated shoulder’s from their autumn/winter 2022 couture collection.

This time around, Viktor & Rolf debuted a collection of looks that were extraordinarily extravagant at the Intercontinental Le Grand hotel in Paris on Wednesday. The show began with sensational tulle ballgowns stylized in confectionary pastel hues.

The dresses in the collection started to get a little more outré as the show progressed—including crooked, sideways, and upside-down silhouettes. The lineup of stunning ballgowns challenged the concept of how these traditional garments should be worn—playfully touching on the concept of deconstruction and revealing the corseted undergarments under the out-of-body dresses.

The manipulated gowns make for intriguing and visually-captivating imagery, breaking the status quo of what couture is “supposed” to be.
