What’s That? Crazy, Funky Hats Take Over the A/W 2023 Runways

Hats of any style have been and always will be a winter necessity. But according to the autumn/winter 2023 collections, they’re being reimagined. Taking over the runway are crazy, funky hats that exemplify the inspirations and themes of each show.

Designers like Kenzo, Louis Vuitton, and Dior men are adding their personal touch to the winter classic hats and sending them down the runway in style. Many hat styles have been appearing in Paris’ menswear collections adorned in faux leather, colorful faux fur, or even fuzzy knit balaclavas.

Kenzo

Kenzo showcased their collection with multiple types of hats, styling both men and women models in various variations of bucket Ivy, or Trapper hats. Kenzo kept their accessories somewhat on the safer side with no bold additions but continued their theme of blending British, American, and Japanese street culture.

Kenzo’s Creative Director, Nigo, explored this through the use of unisex fashion and instead used unconventional fabrics for their winter hats.

Furry trapper hats were seen walking just after a colorfully knit bucket hat made an appearance. Everything with warm undertones or neutrals is perfect for Kenzo’s unisex fall line.

Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton, however, made a bold statement with their winter accessories. Adding bunny-like ears to tie under the chin or a leather bucket hat with long strings attached on either side.

Truly reimagining the winter hat necessity and replacing it with anything but the basics through the collection’s co-creator and artist, KidSuper’s childlike inspiration.

Christian Dior

Dior menswear also presented a runway with winter hat accessories—keeping it clean yet still redefined. Opting for an all-neutral collection, the runway was filled with baseball caps or bucket hats that gave a simplistic edge to the already soothing collection. Each look cascades in browns, khakis, creams, blues, and other calming monotones.

The inspiration for this collection was the dunes of Egypt under the night stars. Which allowed geometric pyramids to influence the structure of each garment, including the hats most models sported.

Street Style

Yet this trend isn’t just stopping on the runways; Parisians were taking to the streets to be fashionable even in the cold winter weather as they appeared at Paris Fashion Week.

Wearing similar styles to what was seen on the runway, furry trapper hats, colorfully knit balaclavas, and simple bucket hats were all seen on the streets of Paris by anyone trying to get attention during fashion week.

Streetwear speaks for itself when it comes to crazy, funky winter hats. It’s safe to say these winter hats were truly reimagined for this season—making them a winter showstopper.

This trend doesn’t appear to be going anywhere soon this winter, especially with the many collections showcasing them for A/W 2023. Maybe we’ll even have next winter to continue rethinking our typical winter necessities and turn them into something eye-catching.
