Gucci SS27: A Demna Revival

On September 25th, Demna revealed his SS27 ready-to-wear collection, breaking through a new wave of Gucci and brand identity. From statement pieces to abstract silhouettes, Demna gave Gucci and the fashion world, something it had been longing for, a sense of non-conformance and personality.

In today’s societal norms, there seems to be a shift or belief that less is more. A simple white top and jeans? Chic. Runway shows with little to no color or storytelling? Groundbreaking. For many, including Demna and myself, they digress and push through the barrier of watered-down expression. So, on a crisp September 25th evening, Demna brought us back to what fashion expression is and should look like.  In Demna’s Gucci SS27 collection, there is a distinct mix between the new age, timelessness, and luxury. For example, the iconic Gucci belt everyone either owned or lusted over at some point in time, made its clapback, reminding everyone and their closets why she was there in the first place.

Touching back on Gucci’s roots and bringing a new destiny for the brand at the same time speaks power and volume in fashion. Speaking of power and volume, this runway showcased women of all ages. In a time like this where aging is looked down upon, especially for women, Demnas execution and vision for this runway was visibly sought out and needed for this generation. Clothing has no age, expiration, or limits, and Demna is proving that now in real time. Not only does this push back the questions about age, but it also pushes forward the narrative and inherent truth; that fashion has and will always be moving society forward.

In terms of touching base on Gucci’s roots, the collection was set in a mockup room of Gucci’s flagship store based in the heart of Manhattan, right on 5th ave. Paying homage to the big apple, Gucci SS27 touched base on every style you can find waltzing around the city’s notorious blocks.
