The Resurgence of the Scarf
Scarves have taken a new form with each decade. From wool to silk, from the tops of our heads to a bag's handle. Scarves continue to evolve. Currently, we are seeing scarves return to the spotlight. A scarf can be so much more than a winter accessory. Each color, texture, and size gives a new look to an outfit or piece. No matter the era, scarves have remained a fashion staple.

Scarves can be worn around so much more than just your neck. People have been wearing scarves as belts and bracelets. In the 50s and 60s, women wore silk scarves as a headwrap or a headband. The patterns they chose were often floral or coincided with the color of their dresses; a simple yet elegant way to add interest to an outfit.
The 70s brought scarves back into trend, with women wearing them on their necks. The patterns were bright, paisley, and colorful. This addition to an outfit complemented this era's relaxed and looser silhouettes.
The early 2000s had scarves back— being worn on the head once again. Men of this era began to popularize the bandana. Simultaneously, you could find your favorite pop star repping a scarf. The accessory was a staple on the red carpet. Icons like Miley Cyrus, Lindsay Lohan, Ashley Tisdale, and Britney Spears often paired their outfits with scarves. In this decade, scarves were thin and light, and were often brightly colored with sequins.

In the 2010s, the small scarf craze died down, and people opted for a double-wrapped layer. People couldn’t get enough of a chunky scarf. Prints were all the craze. Most often, you could spot houndstooth, chevron, or plaid. The infinity scarf was the moment. Everyone wore it constantly, no matter the season.
In recent years, we have been seeing lots of people accessorize their bags with a scarf. This adds a pop of color to an otherwise plain bag. The scarf does the talking while the rest is simple. As you decorate your bag, these fabrics make it feel more personal, a representation of you. Adding this individual touch may seem like something small, but it can completely change the character of an accessory.
