ARTIST SPOTLIGHT Vol. 01: Faouzia
a series dedicated to discovering artist you should know about
The music industry is full of sounds, aesthetics, voices, and lyrics that feel so relatable we cannot help but hit reply. Songs can feel like a love letter or the hardest goodbye, but replaying the part that touches us most makes it all worthwhile. Every artist has a voice that deserves to be heard, and voices are so distinct between genres and artists, but when you listen to her, you know she has something to say.
Meet Faouzia: a Morocco-Canadian singer and songwriter whose voice should be heard in every corner of the world, but apparently, she's still a secret not many have discovered. Faouzia started out like many other artists: uploading covers on YouTube. After winning a local music contest in her home town (Manitoba, Canada), in 2018 she collaborated with DJ David Guetta on the song “Battle” for his album “7.” She then signed with Atlantic Records where she released her first singles and EP’s.
Her sound is a mix of Pop and R&B, but what makes her music stand out to me is how she pairs her powerful vocals with an emotional delivery. Her lyrics are the perfect combination of relatable scenarios, vulnerability, and soft moments I think everyone experiences more than once in their lives. She uses her vocal range not only to showcase her strong vocals but also to bring her emotions to life.

For me, “Tears of Gold” was my introduction to Faouzia. The song immediately stood out to me not only because of the lyrics but because of her voice. I don't know why I was expecting her to have a softer voice… Plot twist: she does not! The song goes back and forth with the dilemma of trying to let go of someone that never treated you right while still being willing to come back to them if the door was left open. That tension of knowing someone isn't right for us doesn't make letting them go easier. One thing I loved from this era of Faouzia is how her singles from that time all got released in stripped version as well. They were then realeased together in an EP with the same name, “Stripped.”
In 2020, Faouzia released “Minefields,” a duet with American singer and songwriter John Legend. Both voices contribute to a story about love, uncertainty, and the desire to be with someone despite the circumstances.
As Faouzia’s music has evolved, so has her musical identity. After announcing her departure from her label and becoming an independent artist in 2025, she released her debut album “FILM NOIR.” As an independent artist bringing dramatic sounds and emotional vulnerability together, this album showcases how storytelling has become a defining part of her music. Having “UNETHICAL” as the lead single was a smart move because the song sets the tone for the album’s intense emotional vibe and the theme of complicated relationships. The song explores the idea of giving so much of yourself to someone that the question where love ends and self sacrifice begins becomes all you can think about. Lyrics like, “If you ever loved me, let me go,” captures that internal conflict.
Faouzia deserves a place in your playlist because her music offers much more than a catchy melody. From her amazing vocal range, her heritage influences, and emotional intensity, you can find at least one song of hers that can be your next most-played song of the week. As many listeners love to be a gatekeeper of their favorite artist, I think it is time the world knows who Faouzia is.
