Tate McRae is not your typical Housewife
Tate McRae is back with new music after wrapping up her last tour, “Miss Possessive" last year. On October 7, the Canadian singer announced her new era through an Instagram post revealing the cover photo for her new single, “Housewife,” along with the release date.

The song and the music video were released together on the night of October 15 through YouTube and all music platforms. The music video, directed by Pierre-Ange Carlotti in the south of France, showcases Tate in different glamorous settings, playfully referencing wealth: yachts, a luxurious house, and a dreamy garden.
Despite the single being called “Housewife”, the song is not settling on conventional domestic life.
Instead, Tate represents women with financial freedom, capable of making their own decisions and being able to enjoy a relationship without depending on it. Showcasing lyrics like “I just wanna make a lot of money be my own housewife” and “I don't need you, I want you and that's my favorite thing.”
Tate plays with the idea of traditional femininity and turns the concept of housewife into independence and self-assuredness.
One of the song's most interesting aspects is its central message: wanting a significant other is not the same as needing one. With a playful and confident attitude, McRae explores how romance and independence can co-exist, and that having one doesn’t mean taking over the other; love can be part of her life without becoming her whole identity.
As someone who has been listening to her since “You Broke Me First”, I have always been a fan of her lyricism, sound, and performances. However, this song took me a few listens to get into; it has a more mature sound compared to previous releases, while maintaining that energy that makes you confidently dance.
Knowing the type of performer Tate is, I was expecting to see more choreography in the music video, but it looks like the direction they went for was a less challenging dance performance. Instead choosing to focus on the visuals and storytelling.
While her sound and artistic identity keep evolving, that evolution is part of what makes following her career so fascinating.
As a fan, I think there is something quite nostalgic and special about seeing an artist grow, not only artistically but in age as well, because you are both growing together and watching them reinvent themselves while experimenting with different sounds and artistic direction.
Whether new songs feel like the ones I first fell in love with or not, being a fan is not just about loving the music that introduced you to the artist, but being open to the music they have yet to create.
