Who is Banksy?

For over four decades, the world’s most famous street artist has remained anonymous. Known only as the alias Banksy, this artist has created hundreds of paintings and murals since he emerged in the 1990s.
His artist identity and his art have captivated the street art world, resulting in many of his pieces selling for millions at auctions around the world. One of his most famous pieces, Girl with Balloon, partially self-destructed after being sold. This brought the piece up in value, and it was bought again a few years later for $25.4 million.
His anonymity was part of his artist persona, but it probably started off as a necessity so that he wouldn’t be detected by law enforcement while creating his art. It takes skill and commitment to evade having your real identity discovered, and Banksy had succeeded until only a few weeks ago. An ongoing investigation has revealed that Banksy is actually a middle-aged man named Robin Gunningham, born in 1973 in Bristol, England.
Banksy’s identity was unveiled because of an investigation that was conducted by Reuters, the world’s largest international multimedia news agency. The agency has confirmed that Gunningham is, in fact, Banksy, but this isn’t the first time that these two names have been brought up in the same sentence. In 2008, a British tabloid reported that the street artist was Gunningham. They had a claim from a Bristol resident who said that the person in a photo showing Banksy at work was Gunningham. Another claim came from one of Gunningham’s former neighbors. The neighbor was certain that he and Banksy were the same person. Although the tabloid got it right, people were so used to the news outlet creating elaborate lies that they didn’t bother to believe them.
A major piece of evidence that contributed to the conclusion of who Banksy actually was was the arrest of Robin Gunningham in New York City in 2000. He was arrested for disorderly conduct, but a written confession from Gunningham himself shows that he actually was arrested for defacing a billboard. Around this same time, there were statements circulating in the news that Banksy had been arrested for trying to paint over a billboard in NYC, which was exactly what Gunningham was doing.
This close call prompted Gunningham to make a change in order to try to preserve his mystery for a little bit longer. He started to go by the name David Jones as a way to protect his true identity. But it was only able to protect him so much. Another piece of evidence that was discovered through the investigation was that a David Jones had been reported to have been traveling to Ukraine in 2022. Within weeks of this trip, a new Banksy mural was spotted. It turns out that seven new murals had popped up in war-damaged towns in Ukraine. These coincidences were what helped lead the investigators to Robin Gunningham.

Banksy has neither confirmed nor denied his identity in these new claims. He prefers to remain anonymous and keep a low profile. Questions have emerged about whether this news will affect Banksy’s market long-term. Some in the high-end art industry believe that it won’t, and that the majority of buyers of Banksy’s work don’t care about or want to know his identity.
But, prices of Banksy’s pieces that have sold within the past five years are on a downward slope. In 2021, the annual value of his auction sales was at a high, totaling $171.3 million. Four years later, in 2025, the annual value was down to $13.3 million. This is thought to be because of a lack of desire for both Banksy’s art and for contemporary art. Maybe the truth about who Banksy is will be able to bring the value of his work up.
Even though there have long been whispers of Banksy’s identity being Robin Gunningham from Bristol, England, many are now disappointed to have it confirmed to be true. He was known for his anonymity and mystery, and some people wish that it was able to be carried on. His uncovered identity takes away from the fairytale-like situation and reveals that all along, he is just a guy from a small town in England.
